Smoke in Yosemite
August 09, 2021 08:56PM
I have reservations for Tuolumne Meadows Aug 15 thru 22. I am concerned if the smoke will diminish the clarity of the air to ruin the views. I will be traveling from Utah. I really dont want to make the trip if the smoke will ruin the visibility enough to ruin the trip. Does anybody know how bad the smoke is?
Thank You.

I have a trip to Tuolumne planned starting Aug 21. I've been watching the conditions. These are the things I've been watching:

AirNow.gov, by the EPA:

Purple Air is a crowd sourced AQI sensor network.

Tuolumne Meadows webcam:

Lately it hasn't been too bad, but it's hard to predict what it will be in a week from now.

It doesn't take much for the conditions to change. We were staying at Yosemite West during the Rim Fire. For the first few days, although it looked like Armageddon when you stood on the south rim and looked north, we had wonderfully clear conditions where we were. After a few days, the wind shifted overnight and we had an uncomfortable but "doable" hike near Bridalveil Creek CG in the morning. We went down to Wawona for lunch and by then, the smoke was so bad that my wife wanted to leave the Park immediately. We stuck it out and, by that evening, it was fine and we had no more problems for the rest of the trip. So, I think the most you can do is see how things are trending and then take your chances.
