Posting a photo here

Since we can't "attach" a photo from our files at this website like in other forums and I don't want to open another photo sharing account, is it possible to share from faceybook? I do have a few photos there....

Yes, you can link photos you have posted on Facebook to this forum. Just copy of the URL of the image itself. You can easily do this by right-clicking on the full size image in Facebook, and then selecting "Copy Image URL" on the menu that pops open (when you right-clicked).

Then in your message here on this forum, click on the "Insert image URL" icon () and paste the URL you just had copied into the dialog box.

That's it.

Here's a photo of Yosemite from my mobile phone that I posted on Facebook last February.

It's time to change this so we can just attach a photo from our documents. What if you don't have a Facebook account or any other photo sharing sites? It should just take 2 clicks to load images here. I would love to share my images here but it's just such a pain to do so. Thanks for listening! White flag

The problem: it costs a lot more money to store image files of photos than text messages on the servers that host this forum. Rick (who operates this forum) doesn't charge us any money to use his site. How much money would you be willing to pay him so you could directly upload your photos to his site? I doubt he earns enough money on the web ads seen on his site to cover the additional server costs he would incur if he allowed us to upload photos directly to this website.

I knew that I would get the "how much money would you be willing to pay him" when I posted this so here I go. I understand that this is a "free" site and I much appreciate that. To be perfectly honest, it's not that important to me to post any of my images here. But, as a landscape photographer who has photographed Yosemite for decades, I thought there might be a easier way for myself and others to post their images here. I don't plan to use this site as storage for my images and in fact I'm sure some of the more regular members will post way more images then I ever will. I will continue to follow and enjoy this website and all of the great information it provides for all of us that think that Yosemite is the most wonderful place on earth. I'm not looking for a fight, just an easier way to get images posted. smiling smiley

It's a -little- cumbersome to link photos to this site (like it is for many message boards), especially if one doesn't already have their photos available for viewing on the web. But honestly, it's not THAT difficult once you learn how. I'm sure if there was an easier way to do it, Rick would implement it.

I'm sure it was if you have a facebook page. Just trying to see if you can get around having to have a photo sharing site to post images here?

If I right click the photo, I have the option to copy, but if I don't have the option to "paste" here. On the other hand, I can cut and paste the address. Might I add, this was the first time, much to the amazement of one of my friends, that I have ever tried to "copy and paste."

You can't simply post the link here, you must click the little icon above the input box that looks like a mountain and with a sun over it. Then paste the photo's URL in that box.

No workie. You didn't use the static url.

Take a look here and maybe it will help:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,49711,49739#msg-49739

For Picasa...
effectively you have something like this:
https://picasaweb.google.com/103089501068510688008/MoreRandomStuff?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKW6de4stadCw#5674876836890442866
That's a link to the entire web page.

Right clicky on the picture and select properties and I get this:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1DA7tve9jxk/TsE2apbyfHI/AAAAAAAAU00/L7hazs-wBKs/s720/P1320300.JPG

Stuff that into img and voila:

I'd put your photo but even the link itself didn't work... prob. due to Album Properties set to "Only You".
You can leave it like that... you just need to get the static link... Or make it public or viewable with an authkey and someone
can extract the link for you so you can see what it is.

Hope this helps.

Having trouble again. Picasa and Google Plus. When I try and copy and paste the photo using the mountain image icon, all that comes up is the letters and numbers and not the photo.

I really wanted to post a trip report on the JMT, but can't.

Put a link here to your photo... or send a PM with your album name that is either publicly viewable... or needs a key

If this makes no sense... well... I tried.

Flickr step by step picture posting in 83 easy steps (ok, maybe a few less than that)...anybody let me know if there is an easier way. I am working in Windows OS btw, for what its worth.

1. In flickr, open the picture that you want to share by left clicking on it in your photostream
2. You need to pick the size of the picture that you want to share...usually "medium 640" works best for me. To do this you can either right click on the picture itself, which will bring down a dialogue box, or left click on the three dots in the lower right of the screen an then choose "view all sizes". Choose the size that you want by left clicking on that size, and you will see the picture at the size it will appear on the forum.
3. right click on the photo, which will open up a dialogue box. At the very bottom of the box, click on "properties", which will open up another box which will give you the address (URL) of the photo. Highlight this address (which will look something like this...https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8564/15673645638_7a51b74afc_z.jpg.....and copy it (right click then copy)
4. Go back to the forum message box where you can type in text. The 11th icon from left is a picture of a mountain with a little sun, it is the "insert image URL"...left click on this and a box will open up
5. delete the "http/// etc. " stuff in there, and then paste the flickr image URL that you copied in step 3. Left click on "OK"
6. You can left click on the "preview" button at the bottom of the forum message posting box at any time to see if it worked...hopefully you will see a nice picture:

If the preview post looks good, then hit the "post" button and you are done!

Just a few thoughts.... storage. Can whoever pays for this forum afford the extra storage costs for all these photos? I'm assuming it's not all for free. Nothing is for free. Having photos stored elsewhere on the Web would be a good way to keep costs, and troubles, down.

Just a thought....

Testing:

(main drag in Bridgeport)

So as you can see, I can successfully post pics (linked from Google Photos) but the images are too big for the screen. How to get them to fit? I'd like to put up a trip report with lotsa pics.

EDIT: I now see where the photo image code includes pixel dimensions and you can just edit those, sticking to the same ratio of dimensions (for 16:9 that's a factor of 1.7777), Here is the same image at 1300x731, which fits my screen nicely (notebook not phone):

(main drag in Bridgeport)

Apparently when embedding a photo the default pixel dimensions for a 16:9 image are 1760x990, so I have to manually edit the pixel settings for each image I embed?
