Some people are going to think I'm mean and evil, but so be it... If you're camping in a campground, or anywhere near other people who aren't part of your group, don't take the baby, because subjecting your fellow camping folk to the ruckus typically made by six-month-old babies is just plain rude.by Mixolydian - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. From the Bright Angel trailhead to Plateau Point and back is about 12.2 miles. The altitude gain on the way back up is about 1/2 mile. When I did the hike, I departed about 10am, got to the overlook about 4pm, was back at the rim around 9pm, and was eating tri-tip at the restaurant by 9:30pm. My descent time was fairly long because I stopped frequently to take photos, look at rocks, and taby Mixolydian - General Discussion
>Mixo is a piss ant, pay no mention Thanks Vince. I appreciate the kindness. I guess I must have offended you by disagreeing or something. But is it necessary or appropriate to make it personal? This is normally a rather polite forum where people don't get personal, so your comments are surprising. >Deaths from before the cables were up hardly qualify >for what the article was talby Mixolydian - General Discussion
And if you call anyone on their foolish behavior, they will get all pissy about it and act like YOU are the ass and not THEM.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
I thought there were 3 deaths from falling off the dome in 2007, 2 of them being before the cables were up, and then that guy who fell off the cables while taking a picture, and that before 2007, it had been many years since anyone died form faling off. I'm not sure about en route deaths.by Mixolydian - General Discussion

It should go without saying that not every paper is pushing out sloppy factory journalism, and those that do are not equal in the level of their offenses, but I'll say it anyway. But would you agree that in the big picture, the overall trend is toward sloppy, superficial reporting and unsubstantiated "facts" moreso than it leans toward producing high-quality, well-referenced material?by Mixolydian - General Discussion
It's a shame that journalism has sunk to a level where it is more important to quickly churn out product than it is to do a good job. On one hand, I recognize that this is due to pressure on the part of the news organizations upon their employees, but the writers themselves are, in part, responsible because they are complicit in the demise of thier own industry due to not standing up and refusby Mixolydian - General Discussion
>If you think loud, drunk campers in the valley are >bad, imagine a bunch of loud, drunk, high on >dope campers in the valley. The truth of the matter is, people who are high on marijuana are most likely to be more quiet and mellow. It's not like smoking pot makes people act loud and obnoxious like drinking alcohol does. Not all intoxication is equal. Another truth of the matby Mixolydian - General Discussion
Interestingly enough, people who made and sold alcohol used to be armed to the teeth and had no compunction about shooting at someone wandering into their illegal distilleries. And then prohibition ended and all that stopped. Strange...you'd think we would have learned something from our history.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
True, the farmers don't belong there, because Americans should be allowed to farm on their own land. Then we could tax their products and solve our nation's financial problems without impacting the wilderness in a negative way.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
Yup, I'm a musical kind of guy. One way of thinking about the mixolydian scale is as a major scale with a flat (dominant) 7th. All of the other intervals are the same as the major scale. But functionally, because, as eeek wrote, it uses the 5th of a major scale as it's tonic, you can replace any major scale with the mixolydian scale built from the 5th. This is commonly done in blues and rock,by Mixolydian - General Discussion

Is is always the custom for people to yell their conversations across the camp at 6am, or did I just happen to show up in the middle of the annual "Leave Your Manners at Home" celebration?by Mixolydian - General Discussion
Chilnualna Falls...criminally underrated. People say, "but the main event isn't all that big." Yeah, but there are a bunch of cool small waterfalls all the way up. And since most people skip this wonderful hike, don't expect a crowd on the trail.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
Well, now that you've described almost the entire park... I'd try to stay in the valley or go down south and see if you can get into the Wawona campground if the valley is full. If you like what you seein Yosemite, come back earlier in the year for some serious waterfall action. I seem to remember that tieing things to trees is discouraged, so I'm not sure I'd count on that as an acceptable meby Mixolydian - General Discussion
"This ambitious goal includes spending up to $3 billion in increased philanthropic, partnership and government resources" Partnership...sounds suspicious. Thanks for the responses! Do you know about the ski trail to Ostrander lake? Is it the same as the hiking trail? Is it suitable for a first time x-country skier? Ideally, I'd like to see places I've not yet seen, so that's another strike against Glacier Point Rd. I've also seen Taft Pt. but would welcome that view in times of snow, as I've only seen the summer version. I'm sure it would seeby Mixolydian - General Discussion

Speaking of snow (inspired by another thread), what's the story about cross country skiing? It looks like it might be fun. I enjoy downhill skiing, and hiking, but wonder if a change of pace might be nice in the winter. Is any gear needed that wouldn't normally be obtained in a rental situation? Are there unique safety considerations? How does one select a suitable trail?by Mixolydian - General Discussion
As long as you aren't taking a ton of stuff with you, then I'd get the cheapest car available. I've traveled in the Neon and the Cobalt and both would do just fine in Yosemite. In fact, I can't think of any car currently available that isn't powerful enough to drive there. What I would recommend is that you reserve the cheap car on the Enterprise web site, and then if you find that your thinby Mixolydian - General Discussion
I would just like to mention that while Yosemite Valley is a great place with lots of cool sites to see, there is no shortage of amazing stuff along Tioga Road, which is where Tuolumne Meadows is located. Even if you don't end up with a car, you will have plenty of great things to see. That said, I'd still rather have a car, and if I had only 1 trip in a lifetime to see Yosemite, I'd want to seby Mixolydian - General Discussion

I would prefer that they not sell crack on Tioga Road. It brings a bad element to the highlands. Oh....crack SEALING? That's different. Nevermind.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
