I tried that cutter stuff last month at T. Meadows, and I had no luck with it at all. It was like I hadn't put anything on. then I got the 29% deet and life was instantly much better.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
>It has nothing to do with removing North Pines, BTW. Scum is scum. I saw a baby rattler on the Chilnualna Falls trail last year. I also saw three rubber boas on the Panorama trail, though those are not dangerous. You can't even get them to bite if you try.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
>I have to come in the morning get permit for the next day, kill time >for whole day, find somewhere to sleep, and go hiking next morning? I did the Clouds Rest hike last week and was, as usual, quite impressed with the scenery. What a tough hike though...don't recall who it was that told me it was an easy hike that was mostly level after the beginning, but I had a very different experience...gotta find out what their training regemin is and see what kinds of walls they climb that make the Clouds Rest hike seem level. This is indeed a remarkably cool-headed forum. Maybe it's because spending so much time in a beautiful place like Yosemite quells anger and frustration so that we don't need to take things out on one another.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
If signs and warnings caused people to make intelligent decisions and behave in a cautious manner, then there would be no smokers, nobody skiing out of bounds, and no kids choking on their toys. But there are lots of smokers, lots of out of bounds skiiers, and lots of kids choking on toys that were intended for older kids. I'd bet that without stores and the other luxuries in the valley, it would be hard to draw enough visitors to sustain the park. The vast majority of people I know are into having ammeneties when they vacation and would be turned off by the idea of being isolated from civilization. The idea that they can be close to their creature conforts makes camping more appealing for many people. I also teby Mixolydian - General Discussion
I thought the mosquito situation would be calm when I was in Tuolumne Meadows last week, what with the reduced water this year. But instead, it was so bad that for the first time ever, I used mosquito repellant. Morning, noon, and night, the mosquitos were numerous and agressive. I found that the 29% deet spray worked wonders, instantly repelling the little devils. It only lasts a couple of hby Mixolydian - General Discussion

It's not so much that I think they deserve to die as it is a common consequence of making poor choices in situations that are obviously dangerous...like deciding to climb half dome when it is wet and the cables are down. Three people die in the history of Half Dome and now they want to make it more safe. I'd rather see resources used in ways that help things that are actually problems. Three deaths over the course of history is insignificant and not worth anyone's time and money. I realize that it's the American way to get all worked up over statistically insignifficant issues (like having a financially/politiby Mixolydian - General Discussion

When I stayed in Camp 4 a couple of years ago, there wasn't anyone manning the check-in kiosk when I arrived at night. There was a clipboard with a list of all of the sites in the camp. "Check in" meant finding a site on the list that had space (less than 6 people in the site already) and signing one's name on said list. I paid for the site the next morning when someone was working tby Mixolydian - General Discussion
It is common for non-profit organizations to pay for artwork and other services. It is also common for such things to be donated. It really depends on their budget and your willingness to donate. It's possible that the org has certain things they've earmarked as things they want to have donated. Photos may or may not be thusly designated. Why is it that the Chilnualna Falls hike gets no love? It's one of the nicest hikes I've ever been on, and it features more water and more falls than the Mist Trail (and every other trail I've hiked in Yosemite). But it rarely gets mentioned. When people say they want to see waterfalls, it's always mist trail, mist trail, mist trail. The Mist trail is beautiful and the falls are great, so I dby Mixolydian - General Discussion
I'm obviously the weirdo of the bunch. To clarify somewhat, it's not that I think seeing a photo would ruin the hike, or would be a substitute for the hike. It's just that I have a certain appreciation for the unknown. I also don't read the descriptions of movies before watching them, so that tells you how wacky I am.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
One thing is for sure, if a bear rips the RV open, it's going to take a lot longer than 15 minutes to fix it. My advice is not to cut corners simply because you don't want to spend a mere 15 minutes moving food into a locker. Be smart, not lazy.by Mixolydian - General Discussion
My ex-girlfriend walked through some poison oak once, and we happened to be near the home of some friends who into plants and herbal remedies and such. They mixed her up some kind of tea and some sort of liquid plant mix to rub on her legs. In a few hours, the poison oak was gone for good. I just wish I knew what they used so I could tell you. In another thread I noticed that some people like to seek out photos from the hikes they plan to take. This was interesting to me because I try to avoid seeing pictures of places that I have not been to in person. I like my initial experience of being there to be entirely brand new.
