In my parts we just call him a rattlerby ggman - General Discussion
I do hour long brutality sessions on the treadmill (4.5+mph, 10 deg incline) I also will do long day hikes here in ga most in the 30-50mpd (oops) range and long runs occasionally. This allows me to go all day up in the Sierras even at the higher elevations without hitting the wall. But I will thru hike the PCT this summer at a pretty fast pace so I will need it. But if I didn't have the AT wiby ggman - General Discussion
ON SHR...... Old snow good, new snow bad. Can't imagine going down snow tongue pass with loose snow on that skree. Or tiptoeing on the mile plus of talus with snow covered holes waiting to swallow your foot.by ggman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I have the hiked the SHR north to TM and it is a heck of a trip. We did about 15 miles/day which is roughly half my normal trail mileage. We had intended on hiking all the way to the end in ten days but frankly doing 4 12k passes in a day burned us out and we stopped at Reds early. Also, I was pretty sick of crossing endless talus fields. SO.... there are many options that allow you to have aby ggman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I want to backpack beyond Wapama Falls. I saw the thread about the bridge getting washed away and saw the pictures of the I-beams that appear to be very easy to cross. However, Yosemite's site lists the trail as closed. Two questions: Is it "legal" to go beyond the bridge and second are the i-beams still there and if not can the bridge be bypassed with a bit of rock climbing. I have been using a Golite UL-20 for about two years. (It is the older model) It weighs just over a lb and stuffs into a sack smaller than a two liter bottle. I have used this well below freezing while wearing all my normal layers and it has worked well year round. On a snowshoe trip last year I camped at over 12k with a lower of -2F and the quilt combined with my bivy sack, a Sea to Summit slby ggman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
There's a bus that runs from devils postpile down to Mammouth mountain and then you take the biker bus into town. The biker bus is free the other is not. From Mammouth the YARTS bus picks you up near McDonalds.by ggman - General Discussion
All depends on your comfort level and the rest of your gear. I use a folded Ridgerest that also serves as my pack frame. In the winter I also add a thermorest Prolite 3 and my pack under my feet to keep me off the snow. I chose the lightest weight vs comfort.by ggman - General Discussion
Would reco taking Teva's or similiar. The water was about knee high in places and you may need them later as well after you cross sunshine ridge.by ggman - General Discussion
Second the comment about the stream crossing at the beginning near Tenaya Lake, it will be very wet but easy to cross. You will also run into snow heading up the north facing ridge toward sunrise. There were significant drifts there two years ago well into June.by ggman - General Discussion
I am planning a hike in the Hetch Hetchy area the weekend of 5/9. What elevation should I expect to encounter more than a couple of inches of snow? The specific area that I would like to get into is Lake Vernon.by ggman - General Discussion
