That's sad. Sounds like a nice guy.by sierranomad - General Discussion
There is also a cafeteria at Curry Village, so if you stay in Upper Pines you can walk there instead of driving/riding to Yosemite Village. I prefer the cafeteria in Curry Village. It's "all you can eat" for about the same price you pay at Yosemite Lodge for a plate of food. SierraFan: Thanks for the link on Upper Pines "first-come"; I wasn't aware of that.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Yosemite Falls & Bridalveil are completely dried up. Nevada & Vernal will have some water, but won't be too impressive. Yosemite is still a beautiful place..unbeatable vistas, soaring granite walls & monoliths, peaceful meadows, the meandering Merced River.by sierranomad - General Discussion
I like both short and long focal length. I now shoot video, so I grabbed these shots from video clips. http://www.yosemitetrailsdvd.com/misc/valley_view.jpg http://www.yosemitetrailsdvd.com/misc/coyote.jpg Sorry for the links, but I don't know how to post directly to the forum.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Just a test. If this works, I'll find a couple of "real" photos to post. http://www.yosemitetrailsdvd.com/free_magnet_souvenir.jpgby sierranomad - General Discussion
That's great news, CaT! Glad to hear it ended "happily ever after".by sierranomad - General Discussion
I'd say the leaves were at/near peak yesterday. A few trees were bare, others still had some green. If you've been thinking about seeing the fall colors they should still be looking good for another few days/week. BTW, can anyone tell me how to post images on this forum?by sierranomad - General Discussion
>y_p_w: I hear the cross-country skiers are a little touchy about snowshoe >tracks "ruining" their groomed trails. True. I snowshoe; and there are times skiers look at me like I'm a bum entering the Hilton; and they're all in the Fortune 500 (even though I'm careful not to track across their groomed trail). Thanks! I'll post a picture or two, if I get some good shots.by sierranomad - General Discussion
I try to snowshoe out to Glacier Point each winter. As mentioned, it is completely different in the the winter. You don't have the crowds. I usually set my tent so I have a Half Dome view...and usually there is just 2 or 3 other people out there. The bathrooms are accessible, which is a bonus. It's definitely a good workout.by sierranomad - General Discussion
I'm going to head to Yosemite this Thursday. Hope the leaves hold until then.by sierranomad - General Discussion

When I was at the Grand Canyon a few years ago the Ranger Program focused on the need to be cautious around all wildlife. The ranger told how a parent instructed his young child to pet "bambi" so he could have a "kodac moment". The buck gored and killed the child. I keep a respectful distance from deer.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Nice shot, eeek! What power telephoto did you use?by sierranomad - General Discussion
Yes, it's definitely worth going to TM, even if you're only going to stay a few hours. As Mike says, the view of Half Dome from Olmsted Point is great. However, if you're expecting the typical view you could be disappointed...you don't get the familiar Half Dome shape.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Last week when I was in Yosemite, waiting to see if I could get a campsite for the night, I chatted with a couple from Nevada. When they entered at Tioga Pass the ranger told them that a storm was coming in and that it was possible that the road could be closed. Assuming the roads were kept open all year, she said "Oh, we'll just stay a couple of extra days". The ranger just laughed.by sierranomad - General Discussion
I enjoyed your report and pictures QuailHiker. It brings back fond memories. In a recent trip I wanted to shoot video of wildlife. I saw squirrels, birds and deer. My wife went on some walks by herself and saw (in addition to squirrels, birds and deer) momma & baby bear playing in the river and a couple of bobcats (like you did). Figures.by sierranomad - General Discussion
David: Thanks for the wishes for my good health. I feel almost normal today (Sunday). Friday all I could do was a little walking in the Valley. Saturday a little better and some very slight exertion. I'm not a fainter, so I'm a little perplexed. The only thing that I can think of is that I was sleeping with my head lower than my feet (I know, easily remedied, but long story) for the first coupby sierranomad - General Discussion
As of 10/13: Some of the Oak trees are in full fall color, but most of them have just started. There is a little red (dogwood?), but not much. Ferns are yellow. There are several deciduous trees with long slender leaves (sorry, don't know the species). These have turned brilliant yellow. One is in the meadow across from Yosemite Lodge that is perfect for framing against Half Dome.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Bill: I just got back from Yosemite this evening. While I didn't make it to Half Dome, I can tell you that as of today there was no snow up there. It's pretty warm in the Valley. Yosemite had a good downpour last night, including Tuolumne Meadows. We went to Tuolumne Meadows today and the snow they got melted off by noon. When we left it looked like another storm was brewing, but if it stays aby sierranomad - General Discussion
CaT: We just got back from Yosemite. Sorry to say, I can't report that I found your camera etc. Actually, due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to look for them. Let me explain. I had scheduled the Half Dome hike/search for our last full day there (Friday). Thursday night I got up to heed natures' call. I felt a little nauseated as I got up, but didn't think much of it. Glad to hear they're not coming down 'till the 15th. I'm heading there and thought they'd be down by now. That's what I like about this forum. Eeek always has important updates on Yosemite facilities.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Yes, thanks for your concern. But don't worry, I won't take any chances. Last I'll be looking at this thread is 10/7. sierranomadby sierranomad - General Discussion
CaT: Yes, I'll give it a try. I too, am not a rock climber, so will go on the assumption that it fell past the ledges - don't want to be another fatality. We'll be getting back Oct 13, so I'll post my results that day or the next. And of course, please let me know if someone else comes up with it before then.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Regarding the ledges along the fall line: earlier this year a young man fell off the cables. If I got the account right, his body stopped on one of those ledges. It seems somewhat likely to me that a smaller item like your camera would also stop there; but you never know. I enjoy that hike anyway (even though the cables will probably be down and no trip to the top) and it will give me an excuse tby sierranomad - General Discussion
CaT: My wife and I will be in Yosemite in 2 or 3 weeks, and will spend some time in TM, and some time in YV. My heart goes out to you, especially in view of your priority in caring for two humans instead of looking for your camera. Weather permitting I'll go take a look. Can you confirm: from your illustration it looks as if you're sure it fell past the saddle/shoulder? Also, is the bacby sierranomad - General Discussion

Thanks eek. Sorry to hear it. My wife and I will be in Yosemite mid October. I was kind of hoping to stay at TM.by sierranomad - General Discussion
