But it's $150 per permit application. I crammed to get everything in, in I think 4 visits. That was $600 for permits. The insurance was $400 - 500, totaling over $1,000. This whole case is ridiculous. The red tape you have to go through to video in Yosemite for commercial purposes is unreasonable. In addition to paying for a "filming permit" ($150 per permit, if I remember) you are also required to have a million dollars insurance policy. I can see where this makes sense for filming crews that include trucks, lights, power lines, etc. But even if you'rby sierranomad - General Discussion

I've not yet done the Pohono but have it on my list for this year. Are you saying that, except for the "destinations" along the way the trail is lackluster? bill-e-g wrote: > My point was: > - dayhike Artist and Old Inspiration from Tunnel View > - dayhike Sentinel Dome from Glacier Point > - dayhike Taft Point from Taft Point TH > - dayhike Dewey and Crocker (and maybby sierranomad - General Discussion
When I see a dog, I wonder "Is he going to bite? Is he going to jump on me, lick me, try to get my food, etc." Or maybe I'm out just trying to enjoy some solitude and a dog approaches me, forcing a conversation between me and the dogs owners. They are one of the quickest and surest ways to ruin my outdoors experience. Forrestranger, this isn't directed at you, per se because you had tby sierranomad - General Discussion
THanks for the images of the shot w/o zoom. Intriguing. I'm a believer. Interesting. I would have thought that w/o a doubt there would be hills between HD and Patterson...or between HD and anywhere out of Yosemite Valley, for that matter. Thanks for bringing the subject up, B. To say that they can "see" HD from Patterson though, is a little like saying that you can see the rinby sierranomad - General Discussion
If anyone goes to take a look, I'd be interested in seeing what the view looks like without zoom.by sierranomad - General Discussion
I've spent more time reading these posts than I thought I would. After leaving my post ("impossible" I didn't expect to come back. But these posts are convincing. I now believe that I was probably wrong. But it certainly does "look" fake.by sierranomad - General Discussion
This is an obvious hoax. I'm surprised there's a serious discussion about it. Reminds me of a kid I grew up with here in California. He said that on a real clear night he could see the lights of New York City from a hill near his house. Unless you can see through rock seeing HD from Patterson; or NYC from California are both impossible.by sierranomad - General Discussion
At times snow tires/4wd is acceptable. When deemed necessary though, chains are also required.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Thanks, YPW. But I think I'll just carry extra rubber loops. Don't want to scratch the wheels.by sierranomad - General Discussion

Yes, those are the type; and they are a lot easier to put on. Now I know to carry extra rubber loops, bungee cords...or something.by sierranomad - General Discussion
Last weekend I planned on taking my annual snowshoe trip to Glacier Point. This is an event that I have great affection for and look forward to, a badly needed break. Chains were required immediately upon entering the park. This was no problem because I brought my chains. So I park in the parking lot near the entrance and put on my chains (mine require rubber loops & clips to tighten the chaby sierranomad - General Discussion

This will be my first time trying to shoot (video) the firefall. Where is the best place to shoot it? Anybody else going to try on Monday? Hmmm. Just thought about Vince's comment about the clouds. Probably won't be a firefall on Monday. Oh well. Still will go, who knows. Regardless, I'll have a great time spending a day in the best place on earth. They keep the road to Badger Pass plowed. Chains are required if driving a car (like I do - a Toyota Echo). Some times 4 wheel drive and/or vehicles with snow tires can go w/out chains. I plan on going up this coming Monday for the evening view of Horsetail Falls.by sierranomad - General Discussion

Thanks SierraFan; sounds like some great suggestions. The one I'm most excited about is Clarks Point. That's a really nice view in Spring, winter ought to be really nice, too. I don't have crampons. Does anyone know if they can be rented in the Mountaineering Shop?by sierranomad - General Discussion
Nice shots YPW! How did you get that middle shot...did you take it between the steps on the bridge?by sierranomad - General Discussion
What are your favorite places in the Valley during winter? I'm going to be camping in Yosemite for a few days the second week of January. I plan on mosey-ing around w/ snowshoes, maybe hiking up as far as I can on the Yosemite Falls trail, etc. But, with all the Yosemite regulars on this forum I thought maybe I could get some new ideas ("favorite" places to see/trails to take in theby sierranomad - General Discussion

Yes, if I need updates on campground or road openings/closings, HD cable, etc. or the latest news, or just to stay "on top" of what's going on in Yosemite, this is the most reliable place to come. A great service eeek.by sierranomad - General Discussion
My experience is the same as SierraFan. I've not had a problem in getting a site - in fact during my trip last January there were plenty of sites available.by sierranomad - General Discussion

Boy, I must've really been fortunate. I've only had one negative experience with rude fellow backpackers, that being at LYV....some "hoods" packed up a couple 12 packs of beer!! They looked and acted more like they should be in a bad section of a city than backpacking. But other than that, all has been fine; and I wouldn't describe myself as being especially forgiving of rude behaviourby sierranomad - General Discussion
and the view of TM isn't the only thing he got wrong. He states that there have been 9 deaths off HD since 1971; while the article in the SF Chronicle linked to by Gary (bill-e-g) says that there have been 9 FALLS, but 3 fatal. Pretty significant detail to get wrong.by sierranomad - General Discussion
