Here's a case in point of support of my post above: I just hiked the entire Pohono Trail. At Glacier Point, as I started the trail, there was a sign giving dire warnings of the trail being obliterated due to snow and hazerdous creek crossings. Since I remembered people on this forum saying they had done the trail recently w/o issue, I did the trail anyway. Snow? Not a single flake on the trailby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the tips guys. Yes, my map shows where I can camp; but thought maybe someone that had done the hike would have a suggestion on a really nice place to overnight. I'll post on the trip when I get back; and put in some pictures if I can.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
O.K., thanks.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
OK, so for those familiar w/ my earlier post on this trip; I was able to turn this into an overnighter. So I'll be camping on the Pohono Trail. I see that you have to cross the footbridge to be considered in backpackable area. I'm sure there are many beautiful places to overnight. Any recommendations? Dewey Pt? Thanks in advance. DSF: Regarding the rangers warnings. They can only go by either the latest report they have received or if they haven't had any report, a "typical" years conditions. They play it on the safe side, which of course is good. But it sounds like they haven't had any report. I'd go by MrCondron's observation and consider it safe.by sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks David. I appreciate your concern. No, your not being discouraging. I'm not new to long day hikes, though. I've done TM to YV in a day several times; have hiked Grand Canyon from Rim to Rim in a day by starting at 2 a.m. and completing at midnight. I'd rather be able to take my time, but circumstances don't allow it and I've been wanting to do the Pohono for years...and this is the bestby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks LBF. Good to know. So here's my plan: Do a loop starting at...oh I forget the name of the climbers campground. Start there, go up the 4 Mile, mosey over the Pahono Trail, catch the trail down to Bridalveil and hike back to my starting point. I figure it should be about 25 miles. It is a little long, but there will be a full moon arisin' at 9:25 so if need be I can do some hiking past suby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Greetings: Going to Yosemite for a good long day hike on Thursday and thinking about the Pohono Trail. I've never done this trail in its entirety. What kind of conditions (i.e. snow, stream crossings) can I expet? ...I just noticed in another thread mention of a trail between Bridalveil and Tunnel View. Is this difficult to find/follow? About how long is it? Thank you, JOnby sierranomad - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I put a few images from this hike on Google Plus. Search for "Jonathan Shannon". There are a few with my name. I work at Mokelumne Hill Elementary School.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Not enough snow to hide the trail, but I was glad that I had my hiking poles. A little slippery in spots. MOre snow on the trail to Eagle Peak. Nice hike. Had coffee and cake in the Lodge Restaraunt as a reward.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Greetings: Planning on a hike on Thursday and want to go up out of the Valley to El Cap via the YOsemite Falls trail. Does anyone know whether this trail has snow; enough to make navigation a challenge? Thank you,by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thinking about hiking from Tenaya Lake to Yosemite Valley this Tuesday, starting at the SW end of Tenaya Lake. 1) Would the Hikers' Shuttle that leaves from the Valley drop us off at the SW end of the lake? 2) I'm taking an old feller with me. I was looking for them last year when traveling through an area just north of Mt. Whitney that reportedly has them (Big Horn Plateau, I think), but didn't see any there. Here are some more from Yellowstone.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotey_p_w The reasons for the permit system is to limit the number of people going up on peak days. If this is what they're doing, then it seems to have achieved that goal. Agreed. It seems to be working well. Comforting to see that the rangers are being kind in passing on unused permits.by sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Members of this forum (as with any group) have different opinions on which is the "best" campground to stay at. (I know this wasn't your question, but...) In my opinion, Tuolumne Meadows is far superior to the others you mention. At TM you have an abundance of hiking trails within walking distance. You also have a store and "cafeteria" within walking distance. What time toby sierranomad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotejimbo I seem to remember a documentary on Yosemite a few years back and I beleve what they thought was Waterweel was probably LeConte also. I saw a California's Gold that was supposed to feature Waterwheel that I think may have been LeConte.
