It was really, really windy in Guadalupe when I was trying to take these, so I didn't spend much time doing it. I was tired and cold, and didn't get as many as I wanted. Ideally I would have gotten some where Guadalupe Peak or one of the gnarly trees were silhouetted by the stars. Also, I should have brought a remote shutter so I could successfully use the bulb mode on my camera. 30s wasn't lby dqniel - General Discussion
I just took that last week outside of flagstaff. ISO 100 f/9 1/80s shutter I took some other longer exposure nighttime shots but I haven't converted them from RAW yet.by dqniel - General Discussion
Sunny f/16 might have been useful when it was thought up but I don't know why anybody would use it with modern equipment. Apertures that small with most modern lenses will destroy image quality.by dqniel - General Discussion
Is that the ultra-poisonous California Newt? Also, thanks for getting my intruder wasp identified. Creepy to know that actually was a wasp. The thing was massive.by dqniel - General Discussion
Cincinnati. For reference it was probably about 6-8 inches long with the tail/stinger thing. Much larger than the wasps we get around here.by dqniel - General Discussion
I don't know what this thing is but it was in my kitchen one nightby dqniel - General Discussion

That picture makes it so I can't wait. I've heard the wind and weather in general can be quite unpredictable in the southwest at this time of year. Hope I get some good conditions to do some hiking, even if storms can make for good pictures depending on the location.by dqniel - General Discussion
Wow, that's really unfortunate. Seems like poor equipment design. Shouldn't the rope be strong enough to support the impact of a 15 foot fall though? I should be in Zion in a little over two weeks to do the Angel's Landing hike, I'll probably try and check out where this happened.by dqniel - General Discussion

It seems like people only share their bad experience too often. It's good to read something like this to remind me that there are actually nice people out thereby dqniel - General Discussion
I take it that's where the rock slide went?by dqniel - General Discussion
I did the Yosemite Falls hike last year about 2/3 of the way to the top before the weather got too bad to continue. Even with the POURING rain the trail was in good enough condition for me to feel safe. I'd say it must have improved a lot since fifteen years ago In fact, there were actually people working on it the day I was there; they had the heavy equipment out and were cutting and placingby dqniel - General Discussion

I have no idea what happened. Maybe the climbers were just exhausted or injured already, saw the incoming storm, and said, "I've had enough." I didn't talk to any of the rescue crew. I was just happy this one went well. The one I witnessed in 2001 was when an Asian lady slipped into Emerald Pool and drowned. By the time the divers got her out she had probably been submerged for almby dqniel - General Discussion

I was referring to your comment about running 30 minutes a day.by dqniel - General Discussion
That beats my prep which consisted of roughly no physical activity for almost a year, living at nearly sea level, and then just doing it. Haha.by dqniel - General Discussion
The first helicopter rescue I ever saw didn't go so well and the woman they were trying to save drowned. That was during my first visit to Yosemite back in like 2001. I was in Yosemite again last spring and the weather was rapidly changing. It went from being upper 90s and sunny in the valley to 45 and snow/rain within four days. Within an hour of reaching Yosemite Valley in the park, I stoppeby dqniel - General Discussion
I did the Half Dome hike from the valley floor with some accidental detours as a day hike. The route we took with detours was probably about 20-22 miles. It was brutal because I was not in "hike 22 miles with 8-9k feet elevation change in one day" shape. I didn't feel like going through that again. That's why I didn't want to do it as a day hike. I hope you do go through with it tby dqniel - General Discussion
I did a lot of research into doing this trail for last year's trip. I decided against it only after realizing I had let too much time pass and hadn't gotten the stuff together that I'd need for such a long hike. I regret not doing it after having heard about the views along the Yosemite Falls trail and the view from on top of Eagle.by dqniel - General Discussion
When I was there last year in late spring it was a MESS. Cars going too fast, mix of visitors and workers wondering into the street without looking, cars stopping where they shouldn't, backing out into the road while cars were coming, etc. Hopefully they work out a better system this year.by dqniel - General Discussion

I'm going to be in northern NM and AZ along with southern UT and CO in early April. We don't plan on doing any backpacking or backcountry hiking at all so I'm not too worried about it. I was just curious to see if it was possible.by dqniel - General Discussion
I got a Nuvi 760 because I needed a GPS for my road trip and got a good deal on it at one of the CC closeouts. I assume this type of GPS can't be used for trail maps?by dqniel - General Discussion
