You've convinced me to try this some time. Even though it looks dangerous, it looks doable. I'm a small guy and am pretty good at climbing around stuff. I think I'd be able to do it if I take my time and just don't get myself into any spots for which I haven't thought out an exit. I love getting off the beaten path so I don't have to deal with the crowds. Offers up some unique vistas that yoby dqniel - General Discussion
From where was this shot taken? Post Edited (02-17-09 22:28)by dqniel - General Discussion
Wish I had a D3  I love that shot of the snow-covered falls.by dqniel - General Discussion
The Ledge Trail seems like one of those trails that people only do as a bragging rights kind of thing. Or maybe for an adrenaline rush? Either way, I'm sure there are better ways to get an adrenaline rush that are much safer. Too much loose rock from the stories I've heard and the pictures I've seen.by dqniel - General Discussion
EXIF info says you were using a Nikon D3. Very nice picby dqniel - General Discussion
Very pretty. Wish I was closer so I could visit after a snowstorm.by dqniel - General Discussion
I need to get some glasses to try this out.by dqniel - General Discussion
Haha. That's a great picture.by dqniel - General Discussion
Great news. the reservoirs sure do need it...by dqniel - General Discussion
I stayed in Porcupine Flat in late July. It was very nice... I also have stayed in the valley in late July. It was horrible :p Go for something in the higher elevation at that time of yearby dqniel - General Discussion
I need to get there during the winter some time. Less people, less haze, more beauty (so it seems).by dqniel - General Discussion
Well I'm back from the visit and in one piece. It was definitely neat to see that park while there was still snow on the ground. Lucky for me, the weather was bad enough to keep people out of the park but not bad enough to make it miserable. I saw lots of rain and some light snow while I was there, and I should have pictures up sometime soon.by dqniel - General Discussion
Thanks for the heads up! Hopefully I'll be able to dry quickly after crossing, because I don't have waterproof gear. Or would it be worth putting some rubber galoshes over my shoes just for the crossing, taking them off and leaving them there, and then putting them back on when I get back at the end of the hike?by dqniel - General Discussion
Thanks for the tip about Tenaya Creek Mike, that information will come in handy when packing my bag Alphen- That sounds like quite a hike! I won't be doing anything near that length on this trip because none of us will be physically fit enough to do 20+ miles in one day. However, I did do Half Dome last year starting from Happy Isles early in the morning and completing it as a day hike. Itby dqniel - General Discussion
I would be doing it as a day hike because it's only about 13 miles round trip from what I understand. Is there a particular reason I would want boots over shoes for this hike?by dqniel - General Discussion
As for shoes I was thinking about these: http://outside.away.com/outside/gear/gear.tcl?gear=Salomon-SpeedCross-2&gear_id=6041&action=showgear I'm only 120 pounds and rarely if ever have pain in my feet, so I'm not too worried about cushioning. Mainly I want something that will be good for grip in the uneven, and usually slick, surfaces presented by Yosemite's plentiful granite.by dqniel - General Discussion
Anybody know what the conditions would be for hiking Cloud's Rest a little over a week from now? Snow depth (if any), average temperature to expect, gear needed (outside of the ordinary like water purification, med kit, extra clothes to be prepared for unexpected weather). I'm looking to buy a new pair of shoes and was wondering what people here recommend... If Tioga Road is open I'd like to sby dqniel - General Discussion
Large is an understatement. Cool picby dqniel - General Discussion
I used the Steripen UV sterilizer with a pre-filter. I got water out of the Merced for myself and two friends. It was pretty quick and easy once I got used to the process. None of us got the poops or anything like that, so I guess it workedby dqniel - General Discussion
That number just says it's closed. No further info is given :\by dqniel - General Discussion
Very good resource for those looking for a unique shot. Too bad I won't be there anywhere close to during a full moonby dqniel - General Discussion
It's not just on the itinerary, it's the priority . I've been to Yosemite twice, but only to the high country once. Even then, I only spent a limited amount of time there. This time, I want to go all the way to where I can get a view of Mono Lake, assuming snow isn't still everywhere (May 27-29).by dqniel - General Discussion
So, what route is your favorite? I believe when I went last year I was forced to take 140 due to some rock slide or something, but I hear 120 is open now? Or was it the other way around? Anyway, what's your favorite route to take? We'll be driving a newer VW GTI with a manual transmission, so that could make things more funby dqniel - General Discussion
Great shot eeek Is that film? It looks like film.by dqniel - General Discussion
The beauty of photography is that a camera, in the right hands, only needs to move a few feet, shoot a different time of day, or change any minute setting or method to achieve a completely new photo. Millions of people will take pictures in Yosemite, yet a skilled photographer can still produce something fresh and worth buying.by dqniel - General Discussion
Well, it's somewhere in there :p I can't figure out which outcropping we were on, it's like finding a needle in a haystackby dqniel - General Discussion
Elizabeth Lake is very serene. The hike is pretty short, and the elevation gain from the trailhead is only around 1,000ft. The trail starts from within a campground near Tuolumne, I believe. That was taken by hiking to the far side of the lake and then climbing/stumbling (haha) up a few hundred feet and then going out onto an outcropping. I didn't want to lug my DSLR up there since itby dqniel - General Discussion
Vince- By all means, tell me of some places outside the valley that will be open in late May The higher up the hike, and the crazier the view, the better. I just need roads to be cleared and opened that lead to the trailheads. Post Edited (04-07-08 14:44)by dqniel - General Discussion
I looked up Eagle Peak and the view at the top looks pretty spectacular. How is the scenery as you're doing the stretch from the Upper Yosemite falls and Eagle Peak itself? For example, is it kind of like the stretch on the Half Dome hike between the top of Nevada Falls and the beginning of the granite steps where the stunning vistas disappear from sight for a bunch of miles, or are you hikingby dqniel - General Discussion
Any more suggestions anyone? If the higher altitudes aren't open I might try Inspiration Point, the Upper Yosemite Falls, and/or a stroll through the Giant Sequoia Grove. I'm also still looking for places to stay as well, and wasn't sure what places to try and avoid or to try and get.by dqniel - General Discussion
