P.S. If you need to email home, there are a couple of places to use the internet in the Valley. The one place I've used and can think of is the tiny library in the Village near the visitor center. You can ask about it at the visitor center and you can try to find it (it's a little tricky). They take names and you get a time assigned to you. Actually, now that I think of it, they have pay inteby letterknit - General Discussion
Never fear! You CAN get a shower at the nearby Tuolumne Meadows "Lodge". It's not really a lodge, but a collection of tent cabins. They have a bathroom/showerhouse there. Park in the parking lot. You pay your couple dollars to a person at the cash register at the Main building where the little store and dinner place is (if you want to eat there you have to call for reservations aheby letterknit - General Discussion
In my opinion, you haven't been to Yosemite until you've been to Glacier Point! You get an excellent perspective of the Valley and the surrounding high country from there. I do like hiking to the top of Lembert Dome in Tuolumne Meadows, that has a better than expected amazing view.by letterknit - General Discussion
Tamarack Flat on Tioga Rd. is just outside the valley, too. Yosemite Creek campground is a little further and down a long dirt road, but it's very pretty. When you pick up your permit, you can also inquire about backpacker's campgrounds where you can stay the night before and the night after your backpacking trip with a valid permit. There's also something you can do where you show up in theby letterknit - General Discussion

I can't believe they're removing road cracks without public input. How do they know which crack to remove? Has a study been completed? If this continues, they will just KEEP removing the cracks.. it will be anarchy! Who is starting the petition?by letterknit - General Discussion

It wasn't my idea to pass it up! Although, I admit, it wasn't really on the schedule to stick around for dinner. My husband said "I don't go backpacking to have a steak dinner." Oh well. Maybe next time.by letterknit - General Discussion

Is there a way to view the replies without clicking on every one? On this forum, you can view a threaded view or flat view. I like that. I like to see all the posts at once, not click on every reply to read it. Can you do that with the forum you linked to? Thanks.by letterknit - General Discussion
Have you googled "John Muir Trail"? There are quite a few resources on the web. I have never done the whole trail, so I'm not much help. I think there might also be a book available at REI about the JMT.by letterknit - General Discussion

It's possible the safety could be affected by the increasing numbers of people attempting the hike to the top of Half Dome. There may start to be more accidents due to the large numbers of people on the cables at once.by letterknit - General Discussion
They had steak for dinner when I went past Vogelsang last August. We didn't stay for dinner, but it sounded good! It's pretty expensive. Sometimes they have walk-in spots for dinner available (if someone cancelled) if you haven't made a reservation.by letterknit - General Discussion
Yes, you can stay at Camp 4 multiple days. I would suggest reserving multiple days up front, it can be a pain to add days later because then you have to stand in line again. If there isn't room, you could be out of luck & have to move. Some people sleep in line, so your best bet is to get there as early as you can. But don't be too discouraged... just because the line is long doesn't meaby letterknit - General Discussion

I wasn't trying to be argumentative or moralizing or saying I'm better than anyone else. I was just stating my opinion that it might be nice to have more walk-in site options. I have tried drive-in site camping in Yosemite. I had to watch and listen to people watching DVDs in their SUV with the back hatch up. As if they were doing a favor by playing the show for everyone around them. I've sby letterknit - General Discussion
I think that Repel lemon eucalyptus stuff got a good review in one of the latest issues of Backpacker magazine. They said it worked *almost* as well as the deet. I was thinking of trying that next, it's good to hear another positive review.by letterknit - General Discussion
I've used that Sawyer's time-release DEET repellant lotion before and it worked pretty well. It's less DEET but lasts longer. I also always bring a mosquito headnet. I don't like to put repellant on my face and that helps when the buggers are really bad. I wouldn't mind having a few more walk-in sites in Yosemite Valley. Why does "camping" mean you have to drive in and slam car doors every 5 mintues, or plug in your RV & hook up your satellite dish? It would be nice to have some more sites that were more friendly to tent campers & those wanting to get a little closer to nature, those wanting to camp a little more like the Natiby letterknit - General Discussion
In the plan that was posted in a previous thread it was stated in the "Implement" section: http://www.nps.gov/archive/yose/planning/yvp/seis/vol_Ia/chapter_2_a2.html "Campsites at Camp 4 (Sunnyside Campground); east of Curry Village; in the Upper Pines area; and along Tenaya Creek" Does that mean they would just close North Pines, but increase/add sites in the other locatioby letterknit - General Discussion

sachrn, Thank you for your comments and perspective. I am an avid hiker, but I've wondered what the non-hikers who climb Half Dome think of the whole thing. I've wondered if people got enough information before they attempted the hike. I wonder how many people turn back before they get to the top and I wonder how many people push on to the top even if, in reality, they shouldn't. Mark2's comby letterknit - General Discussion
