The campground is crisscrossed with downed trees. I'd guess a lot of the cut down trees are just left on the ground. hmmm knowning that OPG is still not open, maybe I'll take 50 to 395( using Pioneer Trail to bypass South Shore, and then 207/Kingsbury Grade to cut over to Carson Valley ) instead of 120 to 395 for my Whitney trip next week. I've always liked the idea of a straight run down 395 instead of zig-zaging on various roads thru the Sierra. There's the Tuolumnie store/post office/grill that's a short walking distance from the BP campground. You'll most likely pass it if you drive into the campground. It's on the main road just west of the road into the campground. It's a pretty small store, but I expect you'd have a good chance of getting your stove fuel canisters. I've used the Horse Trail numerous times going both up and down. It comes down the paved road behind the Happy Isles restrooms. This road goes up to the water tank that supplies the valley with water. The horse trail runs along side the road. Only the horse trail proceeds after the tank. I was in the valley last weekend 7/10-11. I've been meaning for some time to check out Sunnyside Bench trail and see how far up towards Fern Ledge I could get. I didn't get anywhere near Fern Ledge, in fact I never left Sunnyside Bench trail, but I did get all the way across to the top of Lower Yosemite Fall. At LeConte the trail goes down right beside the slabs. The slabs are at a shallow enough angle you can walk out there beside the wheels. There's a beautiful picnic spot trailside where most of the LeConte pictures/videos were taken. At the REAL Waterwheel the trail goes AWAY from the falls.
