I was up in the Sierras (or Sierra, or Sierra Nevadas..!) Today, and the temperatures were a balmy 45-50 degrees! The snow was melting at an alarming rate; a stark difference in one week was noticeable. Do you suppose that these springlike day temps have anything to do with the increased bear activity? I heard this on NPR and thought "you have GOT to be KIDDING!!" It was really interesting because they had the actual recording of the "tune" (I think that the audio program was on Science Friday on the NPR website, also) DBby Bee - General Discussion
I was in and around the valley on Aug 14 2008, and because it was an exceptionally dry year, the falls were really thin or non-existant in some places (the one that is normally visible in the Valley -- Bridalveil?-- was dry) From Sentinal Dome, I could see that Nevada Falls was still running, though. I ride with a couple of bike clubs both on and off road, and I posed the question of sharing the trails at Yosemite with a couple of the members (mind you, I proposed them with a HUGE slant AGAINST the use of bikes on the trail). The response was almost hostile in the accusation that we hikers think we own the wilderness (we do don't we??) and that they were taxpayers, too. I mentioned that so weby Bee - General Discussion
>>Oh, OK, the El Cap nose route also.<< Thats TOO funny!! When I lived in the Bay Area (birthplace of mountain biking) there were constant battles over the shared use of Mount Tam. It never seemed to work out because of a few jerks who insisted on taking the steeps like Kamaikazes. Bby Bee - General Discussion
Perhaps I got lost in the muddle, because I am not clear as to who is to be allowed to carry guns in the park system. Is it an across the board clearance for everyone to pack weapons openly (ie rifle racks, etc.) or is it restricted to those who have the proper permit(s) to carry concealed weapons? 1. Yes, the quote of the Second Amendment is as I researched and read. 2. >>There are no absolute rights defined in the constitution<< This is the 25,000 dollar interpretation, I mean question. The word "absolute" is not stated before the word "right" on any part of the document (to my loose memory of it), however, "right" always seemed to convey itby Bee - General Discussion
>>Sounds like Israel.<< Yes. >>I'm hope you got through that safely.<< I did; thank you very kindly for asking. >>Using societies where everyone packs a gun as an example sounds sort of counter-productive to me; do we really want to follow that example?? Is there security in seeing everyone running around with an automatic weapon? I don't think so.<< I coby Bee - General Discussion
I am new to this site (about a week) and have greatly enjoyed the threads involving nature and the like, but when I ran across one of the "Big Three" topics (the other 2 being Capital Punishment and Abortion) I was hesitant to reply, as I did not want to alienate folks before I had been around a month. that said... I briefly lived and worked in a country that had a different sortby Bee - General Discussion
Let's hope that they make great progress with this project during the winter lulls. I accompanied a communication maintenance crew up to Sentinal Dome several times late into the season (when the traffic would normally lighten up) and it was a nightmare at times. Bby Bee - General Discussion

Thank you so much for confirming my suspicions about using Sorrels with snowshoes before I found out the hard way. I work in the great outdoors for a living, and I have found that after a long day in my Sorrels, my hips experience fatigue from all of the sloshing around. Because I have extremely narrow feet, I have had no luck finding good (gortex or waterproofed) hiking boots, so I have had to sby Bee - General Discussion
