Not even one guess? It's not in Yosemite.... Bet there were rainstorms in Yosemite, we looked north and saw ferocious clouds precipitating.by AlmostThere - General Discussion
I would leave the car at the bottom and hike back to it. If you are late, early, or a freak snowstorm blows into the pass, you won't be stranded. Unless you arrange a ride, it's probably going to take a while to hitchhike.by AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Or go to TM campground, find the ranger with the little dish and the other ranger with the paintball gun, and follow them around. Bring running shoes. The rangers move fast.by AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteVince QuoteAlmostThere QuoteVince I'm glad someone saw a bear and put the vid on youtube. Bear sightings are not at all a common experience. If it were anywhere but Yosemite, I'd agree. Quotey_p_w QuoteAlmostThere I've seen this scenario before on another forum. Do they even give permits to minors? There's no age restriction that I can find. I've seen this scenario before on another forum. Do they even give permits to minors? You will need to stay wherever you specified on the permit as your first night. If that's LYV, that's where you stay. If you got a pass through to Sunrise, the spot on the Clouds Rest intersection will do. I'm going to also suggest that you don't go alone. It's getting on into fall, and weather becomes lby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotetomdisco 2. Find some way to cut down more on total pack weight. 40 pounds (including water) is too much for this body day in and day out. In hindsight I could have made due with just one water bottle and the Katadyn filter in July. There were ample small fresh sources of water along the trails. Next year to Yosemite would likely be late August or early September (for less skeeters) sby AlmostThere - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If I were dayhiking, I'd wear the Merrel Ventilators or the Newport sandals and slog through whatever. If backpacking I'd take the Tevas. As I understand a good portion of the trail was actually under standing water in June.by AlmostThere - General Discussion

Quoteeeek QuoteAlmostThereI suppose I should be thankful he figured out what bus I was supposed to be on. Did he say anything about it detouring through Oakhurst and Mariposa? Nope. We have reserved tickets for the hiker bus, so I called and asked the reservations guy about last minute refunds if the fire kept the road closed- he said the bus was still running because the fire was "on the other side of the park." I said, oh, so it's not on Highway 120, the route from Curry to Tioga? He put me on hold and came back with the number for road conditions. I rode from Mammoth to Tioga coming back from a hike recently - loved being able to look out the window the whole way and be a tourist for once, usually I'm driving over. I'm not opposed to using UV gadgets if that's what you want to do. On a completely personal note, I am opposed to my having a gadget in my pack that is intended to fill a vital role with direct impact on my well being that is not completely klutz (ie, ME) proof. I could drop my Hiker Pro on granite and have a chance of slapping duct tape on a crack and still be able to filter water - I could notby AlmostThere - General Discussion
Iodine isn't effective against crypto, isn't as effective against giardia... same with chlorine bleach, by the time you add enough to kill crypto you are drinking straight bleach. Steripens require batteries. I'm just thinking here of a friend who pitched his tent and his idea of putting the can away from camp was to put it ten feet from someone else's tent. We were all got up at midnight by "someone else" who took exception to the biggest black bear in Yosemite showing up to pick up the bear vault and sit next to his tent licking it, after knocking over people's pots and biting into my litby AlmostThere - General Discussion

Quotetraildad I am hiking from Tuolumne Meadows to Glen Aulin. I want to buy some sort of water filter for the trip. I see that Katadyn now owns the PUR Hiker. I was looking at the Katadyn filter bottles and am wondering what level of filtration is needed. The high end Katadyn claims to protect against viruses as well as the rest. Do I really need that level of protection? What are the advantagesby AlmostThere - General Discussion
