I am baffled at times by the rules as interepreted or quoted by those here. There is a broad range of experience here and frequently those most experienced don't agree on the intepretations and actual experience of dealing with rangers has also varied. EXACTLY one week from right now I should be at or getting very close to the Peak of Clouds Rest. It seems as though the potential of storms is very improbable until at least after the Clouds Rest portion of my hike. So I think I probably will be getting to Half Dome right about the same time as most of the Day Hikers from the Valley (early afternoon) and make the same assessment they make. QuoteFrank Furter If you can scope out the trailhead the night before, that may be helpful. Also, visit Olmstead Point (just down the road from Tenaya Lake) with your family prior to your departure (will be able to see Half Dome) if circumstances allow. Will do. Quotechicagocwright I am traveling with my family of four from Chicago in August. We are flying into Phoenix, visiting the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, a night in Las Vegas, Death Valley, and most importantly, Yosemite. The relevant portion of the trip begins with my family dropping me off early morning at Tenaya Lake. As Almost said, you can walk up the slope next to the cables. I would probably call that a scramble and as Almost pointed out there is a lot of exposure. So what would the route be classfiied if there were no cables? Class 3? Separately the classification of Snake's Dike up Half Dome is 5.7 I believe.by chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. There is a great day hike in Skagway if you ever end up at that port. There is a mountain to the right of town (looking from the docks---I can't remember what Compass direction it was). Quotettilley QuotechicagocwrightFinally a non-Yosemite related travel question. We are renting a car in Phoenix and dropping it off in Fresno (will spend a few days there with family). My planned trip is approaching. Reservations at Tioga Pass Resort. The consensus a couple months ago was that the Tenaya Lake Crossing would be dry on August 23. Has anyone changed their mind? I agree that all those things you listed could be done. And they probably would even improve safety. But there are tradeoffs. Someone has to pay for the things you listed. I don't want a Nanny State that attempts to take away all danger. I also don't want to pay for it as a taxpayer. Also even if some of the items were free I don't want them. I think this article is what frustrates some of us over this issue. I don't want more government intervention and yes that may mean more freedom which may mean more death. But I don't want more signs and definitely don't want restrictions on what I can do in the Park. Obviously this is limited to restrictions that don't cause harm to others or the trails. QuoteDavidK42 Well, not really my place to criticize what anybody thinks is a great day's hike but, FWIW, doing all that in one day strikes me as giving you very little time to actually enjoy much of it (unless (maybe) you're planning to make it a VERY long day).
