QuotettilleyI'm liking my decision last year to follow a joint in the granite to a point north of the saddle Yeah, it's far from clear that we took the best route. We actually got cliffed out trying to stay a tad further north of the saddle, so I'm not sure where you went up. The solo guy we met at Matthes said he came over well south of the saddle and it was just a (steep) walk up through treeby Royalist - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteBearproofThanks for the visual on the slot canyon...I gotta get there next time I am at Matthes. It's easy enough to find from Matthes, but if you want to get there from Echo Creek, it's here: N37 49.419 W119 23.176 You can pick it out visually from Echo Creek; it's just to the right (north) of the first major saddle left (south) of Cockscomb. Quotechick-onyou can simply park at the Elizabeth Lake TH Hmm! I specifically asked the ranger if we could park there when I picked up the permit; he said "oh no - you must park at Soda Springs." So - is parking at the Elizabeth Lake TH legal but discouraged, or is it illegal but never enforced, or what? And are there bear boxes at that TH (I didn't notice any, but I wasn't looking)?by Royalist - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuotequmqatsI think you're seeing the mist coming off of Vernal Fall, blowing across the trail, and up the cliff face. I guess so - I just never realised it could go up so high above the fall. Never been up to Sierra Point to see it, and I don't think it would be obvious from the main trail. QuoteIt can be like hiking through a hurricane in that section of trail during peak water flow. Is that a waterfall coming down to the right of Vernal, or is it just a faded area on the photo? If it's a waterfall, what happened to it (why isn't it there today)?by Royalist - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Drove up from the Bay Area last Thursday; left home c. 05:00 and got to the TM wilderness center about 2 minutes before 10:00, having made a couple of brief stops along the way. Nowhere to park along Soda Springs at 10:30 (zillions of day hikers), so we parked at Cathedral Lakes TH and took the shuttle back to the store/grill. Are we likely to have difficulty getting Robinson Creek (aka Twin Lakes) permits walk-up the Thursday before Labor Day? I have no idea what the quota there is, nor how popular that trailhead is, and the USFS web pages are no help (unless I missed something). I'll phone the Bridgeport ranger post on Monday, but we're trying to make plans this weekend, so any hints would be helpful. As a generalby Royalist - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The only reason the GCT/Ten Lakes trip wasn't so good was because the distances and heat were too much for our level of fitness (much improved since), so we had neither time nor energy to explore much. We did the complete opposite for Matthes - allowed ridiculous amounts of time and just soaked it all in everywhere we went. That gave us time to noodle around and find that "secret" slotby Royalist - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteplawrenceIn your travels to and from Matthes Lake, have you ever come across the slot canyon shown on Greg Aiello's "Still Wild" video of his backpacking trip through the area? As discussed in my earlier RFI thread, we went in via White Wolf, down to Pate Valley, up the canyon to Glen Aulin, over the flank of Tuolumne Peak to Ten Lakes, and back to White Wolf. Six days; well over 50 miles. On the first day, we spent 50 minutes climbing over/under/through a huge deadfall tangle that had basically obliterated about half a mile of trail on a steep slope in the Harden Gaby Royalist - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. When we drove out from White Wolf back to the Bay Area yesterday, the smoke along 120 was unbelievable. It was very heavy at White Wolf and for a few miles west, heavy all the way to the BOF gate, and very noticeable all the way out to Groveland.
