Fair enough. I have traction gear; I wasn't sure if they were being overly protective. Should all go fine, is there a park-imposed penalty?by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey everyone, Planning a trip to Yosemite soon. Does anyone know what the situation is with the winter closure gate on Upper Yosemite Falls trail? Is it closed for the season already? If so, is there a penalty for crossing it or is it just meant to make people think twice before continuing? Thanks!by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yes, there were a couple of times I felt that I was in a dangerous spot. These were almost all in the beginning of the trail when I was trying to find how to get to the Bench, rather than when on the Bench itself. The soil underneath the cliff is almost exactly like kitty litter and it sits exactly at the angle of repose. So while staring at the cliff trying to figure out what I was doing wrong,by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hey everyone, A few weeks ago, I finally made it to the park and hiked to Sunnyside Bench. Although I had intended to make up to Fern Ledge, my hiking partner and I didn't feel comfortable with the exposed climb after making it to the Bench. But here's a detailed trip report so that others may get to one of the coolest places in the park! Getting started: A number of prior reports mention sby yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Amazing photos. Where exactly is the start of the trail?by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Not trying to assume anything. A number of the trip accounts I've read mention seeing snakes basking on the sunny ledge after the talus field.by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey everyone, I've been noodling around with the idea of hiking to Fern Ledge. The only problem? I hear that the first part of the trail is a hang out for snakes. And that has me concerned. For those of you with extensive off-trail experience, have you encountered snakes before in Yosemite? What do you do to avoid them? Thanks!by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. A couple of things to be aware of if you're doing a night hike: 1) You will have very little depth perception. What is in the moonlight will be bright, anything else will be pitch black. You can compensate for this somewhat with a flashlight, but be warned that tripping is a serious hazard. 2) Your view from on top of Half Dome isn't necessarily much better than Glacier Point or elsewhereby yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yes, sorry, I should have been more specific. I was hoping to hike down to the base of the Falls and I was curious if I was going to get drenched!by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey everyone, I'm thinking of going for a hike up UYF next week (March 11th). Will Yosemite Falls have sprung to life again by then? Is there still an ice cone at the base? Thanks!by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That is certifiably insane. I was so intimated by the spray and the breeze that I couldn't even make it down to the viewing platform the first time I climbed UYF. It took two more times to get me down to that platform!by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hello everyone, This might be a bit random, but my car is on the blink, preventing me from going on my planned day trip up to Yosemite. Does anyone have a day trip planned from the Bay in the next few weeks and wouldn't mind another passenger? Please let me know! Thanks!by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The threes are also about 100 years older, and also 100 years worth of growth higher. It could be that it's the same angle, but that more of Nevada Falls is blocked by them.by yosemitenut - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

It took me a few minutes looking at that photo to realize where it was taken. That's a lot of snow on UYF trail! Maybe snowshoes would be a very good idea indeed.by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I'm hardly a forensics expert, but if the worst actually occurred, I would have thought some bone would have been found at the base of the falls or under a boulder. Bone is fairly strong, and easier to spot against the darker boulders.by yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hey everyone, I'm planning a trip back to Yosemite, but unfortunately won't be able to make it until either late December or early January. I know if there is snow on the ground, a lot of the valley rim hikes are technically "closed," but are there lots of people who still take them? Is it feasible to get up Upper Yosemite to check out the snow cone at the bottom of the falls? Any faby yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hey everyone, Just wanted to first thank you guys for having such an amazing site. I've learnt so much already about secret nooks and crannies in Yosemite. Speaking of secret nooks and crannies, I've wanted to hike to Fern Ledge for a long time. Unfortunately, Yosemite Explorer's website seems to be down, so I can't access any of his photographs as a guide. A number of other sites that I haby yosemitenut - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
