Quotechick-on They took the shot of the lady having her roast stolen by the bear just west of Leidig Meadow... west of the Merced... (the shot at 4:15 of the video) This isn't anywhere near the current day backpackers campground. I've never even driven in there... but I guess there still is a group campground at "Sentinel Beach" and there def. used to be a road right to where theby Old Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Last weekend we were going through stuff at my Dad's house and we came across some Ahwahnee Hotel menus from 1959. My Grandparents must have gotten them as we always ate in Camp 14. Quotechick-on Tanks for reporting back. Pretty sure I did mention it was a wee bit windy atop that dome you slept on. On my Muir Gorge trip last year setup shop there on day 1 in and eventually awoke during the night and said "this sucks" and prompltly packed up and move down to the east out of the wind. Right around 1965 I went up Half Dome for the first time. We had just reached the top and were out at the Visor. All of a sudden two jets came screaming down Teneya Canyon. They flew by right at our level, one pilot actually waved. They descended into the Valley a bit and right about Bridal Veil Meadow they hit their afterburners and quickly went up out of sight. Pretty cool for a 16 year old. Liby Old Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
T.M.H.S.C. dining room in indeed open to the public. You do need to make a reservation. They are not limited to just 6 spaces either, they have a set number of seatings and if you have a reservation you get in. If you are staying there you still need to make a reservation, at least for dinner. Best to do it the night before when the lodge is full. Quotettilley Quoteeeek Quotettilley(prefer reds, but don't think they handle backpacking well) I've always taken reds. They don't need to be chilled. I don't think reds taste the same after being poured into the PlatyPreserve, put in the bear can, and knocked around. I'm aware of the past problems at Olmstead and their valid concern about being there too early, but there was absolutely no snow anywhere near the point. I know it's been warm lately and the budget problems they are having, but it seems it could have opened a little earlier.by Old Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I spent a few days in the Valley last week, big afternoon thunder & lightning storms, full falls, not too many people (until Friday evening), had a great time. Tioga Pass opened up Saturday morning & I was among the first to pass through. Very little snow was evident by the roadway. When I got to Olmsted Point I was very surprised by the lack of snow. # 2 looks like the old “swimming tank” at Camp Curry #3 might be at Happy Isles. Just a note, the old crossing of the Dana Fork behind the Tuolumne Meadows High Sierra Camp was exactly like that, no bridge. #5 Mirror Lake? #7 wild guess…..base of Liberty Cap just up from the La Casa Nevada site? #8 Illilouette Fallsby Old Dave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Not really.....I just know I check everyday and today is the first time I have seen any open dates at TM on the DNC reservation site in months. I'm guessing it may have something to do with the end of the second High Sierra Camp lottery and maybe they released dates at TM that were saved for before & after HSC reservations. Here are a couple more from those trips, the poor old Jeffery pine and then two of us having lunch. Over the next few months I’ll try to post some of my family’s photos from the past. My grandparents first went to Yosemite in the early twenties, the first year I didn’t go I was in Viet Nam. These photos remind me of a couple of trips I took in the mid 70’s, one to Glacier Point – Sentinel Dome and the other to Dewey Point. The weather was beautiful at GP and on the night we spent on Sentinel Dome, crystal clear blue skies. No so at Dewey Point. The photos are old but they give you an idea how it was.
