Looks like a very successful trip. I hope the scouts realize how lucky they are to have someone willing to give them this opportunity, and to have such incredible beauty within reach for a long weekend.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I went through here in early July and was worried about the same thing then. I found this page to be useful, giving you a general idea of how much water is draining into the Merced River. The data on that page obviously represents the cumulative rain/snowmelt over the whole drainage area rather than current conditions of a specific creek/pond, but its real & current data. As of today its abouby Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
The unnamed lake/pond between Sunrise Lakes and Clouds Rest was in great shape on July 5, as were several creeks around that area. However, there was a significant rain event on July 2/3 that helped everywhere, but it's been dry since and things are drying up again. Sunrise Creek in the area south of the 0.5 miles of trail between the Half Dome and Clouds Rest trails was flowing very well today.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the comprehensive post David. Encouraging to hear that thefts are rare with common sense precautions.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
OK, sounds like a plan. Thanks for all the replies.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for all the feedback, sounds like we should be fine.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
What do you guys think about leaving your tent up with some gear (bag, pad, stove, maybe even the big pack) in the backcountry while you do a day hike with a smaller or reduced-weight main pack, if you're planning to camp 2 nights the same place? How much risk would I be taking? This would be in the Sunrise to LYV area in July.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the replies. Does that depend on how much there's in the tank already and how much I'm adding? Aren't there a bunch of additives in auto gasoline that would be missing from the stove gas? I'll have a rental car but don't really want to risk it if there's any chance of causing damage. I'll ask a ranger, but maybe the safest/greenest thing to do would be to leave it in a bear box aby Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'm pretty sure we're going to end up with some unused white gas before we go into the backcountry for 5 days in early July. What's the best way to dispose of it? Obviously, if I can find someone in the backpacker campground who wants it I can just give it away to them, but many others may be in the same situation. If I can't give it away, is there somewhere it should go?by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotehulkman75 Justin-T, we made it to the cables about 12 and took a break to reapply sunscreen & hydrate. We probably had about 40 people hiking up the cables with us. It was close to 90 degrees during the hike. We each drank about 9 liters of water. I'm glad I brought my water filter, otherwise we would have been begging for water from other hikers. I met quite a few people who were foby Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for posting, that's a long day on the trail! I'm curious what time you made it to the cables? Me and my son will be going up there in a couple of weeks, and I'm wondering what time it usually starts to get really crowded.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
That's good news, thanks.by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Me and my 16yr old son will be hiking from Tenaya Lake to Clouds Rest & Half Dome and then into Yosemite valley (taking 4 days), starting July 4th. We're planning to camp a couple nights near Sunrise Creek where its close to the JMT, but I'm wondering if it will still be flowing enough to use as a water source. Anybody been there this past week can tell me how its looking there now?by Justin-T - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
