Another stunning photo. One of the ways I try and choose where to go walking is just by looking at maps (as opposed to following known trails, people's recommendations, etc.) So, looking at the topo map coming into the Valley from the south, it's pretty obvious that the Rostrum and Elephant Rock could be short easy walks with magnificent pay-offs in the shape of the views from the cliff edgesby Axis Weevil - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotemarkskor Bus driver will stop anywhere on route if/where safe to do so...to drop off backpackers. Pleased to see this. I'd only read things saying that they won't stop anywhere other than Glacier Point (unlike, say, the Valley to Tuolumne Meadows shuttle, which has a stated policy of stopping anywhere safe, I think). Do you know, does "safe" basically mean a sizeable pullout eby Axis Weevil - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I've not hiked an inch in SEKI but I'm planning to do day-hikes like you, itchbay. And I've done a lot of research. So this may help ... Lots of other recommend the Giant Forest. I'm thinking of parking at the big museum parking lot and taking the shuttle to General Sherman (will it be running when you're there?), then walking back via the Congress Trail, Circle Meadow, Tharp's Log, Log Meaby Axis Weevil - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. I think the answer to my original question was "yes, it is illegal to cut the zig-zags (but it's complicated)". I agree with everyone who thought the piece was over-dramatised, hyped, or even fabricated. I said I thought McNeish was generally respected but I lost a little after reading the article.by Axis Weevil - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Sweet maps. I'm intrigued that one of your "Further Distance" nodes is between Tioga Road and the Valley. It seems unlikely somehow. I didn't particularly come to a Yosemite forum to be reminded of my student days but P is a subset of NP so some NP problems are polynomial. Is cutting of zig-zags specifically outlawed in Yosemite ... or elsewhere in the Sierra? I ask not because I'd ever want to do it (quick way to erode the mountainside) but because the following article (by a generally respected author, I think) claims it is yet I've not heard of any specific rules against it. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/a-look-to-the-future/0015997/ QuoteDuring ouby Axis Weevil - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks rafal. I enjoyed tracing out a few possible routes and seeing what the mileage was. Helped me plan a few hikes for a possible future visit. And I particularly like the way the map auto-zoomed as you chose the next node in the journey. Very clever and the sort of feature that made the tool fun to use. But I was a bit suspicious about the figures for uphill and downhill. So, I lookedby Axis Weevil - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
