Hey all. I'm headed to Lower Merced Pass Lake this weekend. Have never backpacked there. This was last-minute as my original Sequoia NP plan fell through due to lack of viable water sources. I have not followed the fire damage from recent years to know if this area has been impacted. I usually hike out of Tuolumne Meadows. Is there scarring in this area of the park? I wasn't sure how to look thatby mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah just discovered that. Thanks!by mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Anyone know of a forum similar to this for Sequoia NP? I'm trying to get water level info for an upcoming trip, and I can't find any good first-person sources. These types of message boards are always good for that. Thanks.by mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I can't remember the last time I saw one before my last trip. I saw two, not together, on the trail from Lyell up to Vogelsang this August. This was around the time that rangers had warned of bear encounters in the backcountry area.by mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Ditto ditto ditto on parking at Dog Lake lot and elsewhere, including the side of the road. The Dog Lake lot is best, though, because it has bear lockers and trash bins to clear out your car before the trip. Enjoy yourself. Hope you catch a morning view like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fwt0tbq7a17owls/Photo%20Aug%2003%2C%206%2043%2022%20AM%20%281%29.jpg?dl=0by mbazeley - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I didn't see it until the next morning before I left. I pulled it out of its spot and left is sitting out near a tree so he would know that I had seen it. Had I had pen and paper, I would have left a note explaining the "rules of the road."by mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
My tent lines are already reflective thanks to REI. So I camped for a night in Lyell Canyon a few weeks ago on my way to Vogelsang, I woke up in the morning to find that a fellow backpacker had stashed his bear canister well away from his tent (good), but 10 feet away from mine (bad!). And it wasn't nighttime or anything. It was obvious to him that my campsite was there. Still wondering whatby mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Google suggests that it's closed. Anyone know for sure?by mbazeley - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

So the Garcia bear vaults are black, obviously, and I've always thought I should paint the darn thing bright yellow or add reflective tape so I can better find it in the morning. Is there any reason to believe that doing that makes it easier for bears to find? I always assumed they used smell to track down our precious food stashes. And why are they are black in the first place?by mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I had not realized that the park was open to backpackers. I thought it was all shut down through July. I have a Lyell permit for Aug. 1 and I worried I wouldn't be able to pick up my permit. Should I just expect a call from them two weeks out?by mbazeley - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
