I just brought my First Need XL and refilled on the Tuolumne when we stopped for lunch. I had to make sure that my kids were drinking enough. We went from TM to Glen Aulin area and back to TM in 8 hours of hiking. We went through 10 bottles times 24 ounces, along with three 12 oz bottles of Gatorade.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just got back from Tuolumne. We were in the B loop, and didn't have a problem. At the higher elevations, mosquitoes were worse. Dog Lake area was bad.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoterobinjayp relocate to loop A right by the water which had minimal mosquitoes I am sure hoping that loop A has minimal mosquitoes compared to other areas of the campground. Quotehotrod4x5 Check the recreation.gov site daily, over and over as much as you can. I have to agree with hotrod. As a matter of fact, reading this post reminded me that I still needed a reservation for next Thursday night. I just went on the website and, lo and behold, there was an opening. Thanks all for the responses. I went to REI at lunch time. They did not have the Katadyn Pro. I was set to buy the MSR Miniworks EX. I then saw the first need XL. I totally forgot that I bought one (first need XL) at REI last year for emergency situations. It is heavier than the others, but I think that it will be sufficient.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Is there an formula for amount of water to bring on a hike vs miles to be hiked? Our long hike next week will be TM to somewhere along the Glen Aulin waterfall area; not sure how far we will go. It will be myself and my boys, 13 and 9. I will carry most of it, with the boys bringing several bottles. While I am at this, a related question would be: What is a good water filter to buy? There is a RV site open on the reservations site, but I am arriving in a minivan and plan to camp in a tent. What do the rangers with my reservation upon check-in? I would like to make sure that I have a site for the first night that I am there, which is next Monday.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Can I ask what day of the week that you went? We will be arriving on a Monday. With my experience, most people leave their campsites on Sundays. Early in the week is an easier time to get a site.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

If I get on I-17 by 6 AM going north, will I miss the traffic congestion? I was planning to leave by about 7 or 8 AM anyway, so that I get a campsite(no reservations) and settled in Tuolumne before dark. I know that Hwy 17 always seems congested. Taking the second route, I-5 to 120, route adds about 40 miles but the speeds will be faster.by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I need practical info from the Santa Cruz area folks. I am going to a wedding near Santa Cruz in August. The Monday morning after the wedding, my kids and I are driving to Tuolumne Meadows. What is the fastest route factoring in traffic, winding road, etc? Various map sites have me either: Go up 17 to 880, 580, 205, 5 to the 120, or Go down the 1 towards Watsonville, then the 129, then 152by snorkus - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I have found that getting there on a Sunday morning is best, getting there by 7 AM; seems like there are more choices of campsites. I think that I learned that from Telfair Avenue. Most people are packing up to get back to work on Monday. Drive around the campground, look to see who is leaving. Near a bathroom but not too close. We will be driving from LA (Glendale) to Three Rivers to spend the night, go into SEKI for the day, then come back for another night. Start out early the next morning (~7 AM) for the drive. Instead of going to Yosemite this year, my family is going to go to Sequoia and, hopefully, Kings Canyon. We will probably stay in Three Rivers. Any suggestions on a motel there?
