Hi, Maybe someone is able and willing to help me out: I'm very interested in petroglyphs and pictographs. Owens Valley is a very interesting place for this and traces of humans can be found in many places. Last year I've spent a day in the Fish Slough area and had a great time exploring three different rock art sites. The area with the "stickman"-petroglyph had lots of interestinby Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
LOL! no. I'm sittin'' thousands of mls to the east in Europe. but I'm checkin' the webcam almost every day dreaming of yosemite. this guy just happened to be in the front of the webcam. I have no idea who he is. you see people in front of the camera once in a while but this is the best picture I've seen so far.by Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm travelling from Europe so my options are limited anyway as I only bring 2 x 24lbs. luggage for free. That doesn't leave much of a choice for a motor controlled panoramic head. So far I'm bringing my camera gear in my hand luggage but airlines get more restrictive about that too. I'm using a Canon Rebel T2i with different lenses (Canon 70-200L/f4, Cby Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Outstanding! Thx for sharing. It's a great piece of history. Indeed there's very little footage of that time. Having said that I'm glad it's over and nature is being taken better care off now.by Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hi guys, Yosemite has been featured in many commercials (I like the current Panasonic UK commercial) and magazines covers (e.g. Half Dome is on the cover of the current Outdoor Photography magazine). Half Dome is also featured in Chevrolet's commercial. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD8zAJIyWRA&feature=youtube_gdata_player (starts at approx. 0:19). QuoteSierraGold In a later post, you referred to Paiute OR Miwok. Considering the fight that's going on between the two tribes as to who was there first, that could mean something very significant. Knowing some of the history behind the feud (and whether someone may have carried it there while hiking and dropped it), my money is on Paiute. Quotetraildad QuoteHalf Dome Hiker In fact I think the use of a harness is wrong and should not be encouraged in any shape or form. Total overkill and unnecessary. Just my two cents... Quoterobinjayp Just very passionate about safety, especially my own. So am I, so am I. I'm glad you made it. Don't worry about your upper arm strenght. In fact I even think women have a slight advantage on the cables.by Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's "wrong" because the proper use of a harness (or the carabiners to be more precise) requires a stop at every pole. This will lengthen the time of your ascent, it will require extra power and it could cause a "pile up" for other hikers. Don't make the cables more complicated than they are. Proper preparation is all you need. I think it's total overkill to use a harness aby Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So you are saying the harness setup used in your group did not delay the ascent and did not cost additonal power and strength?! Very hard to believe. From my experience HD is not a technical hike at all and should be done without the use of a harness (even though the Black Diamond harnesses are very good in general). Nice trip report. Love the ongoing intensity of the waterfalls. Do you have more pictures of the pictographs?!by Half Dome Hiker - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You don't need a carabiner for the cables. It will just slow your (and your fellow hikers) progress. It is also doubtful if you will gain any extra safety. Half Dome is not a technical hike whatsover. Be prepared (shoes, water etc.) and bring some sturdy gloves for the cables. Just my two cents. Has anyone ever seen or does know of rock art (petroglyphs, pictographs) in Yosemite?! I found a couple of references that there's rock art "somewhere" in the Hetch Hetchy area but I haven't seen any pics yet. Hi, I'm staying at Bishop for another day before I'll continue to Yosemite on Friday. I know there are 3 better known petroglyph sites near (north of) Bishop. The BLM used to give infos but I've been told they don't do that anymore. Can someone provide me with sriving directions or even has infos on other sites than Fish Slough, Chidago and Red Rock Petroglyphs?! I like the chances you quoted. Actually I'm planning to be at the Happy Isles trailhead at around 5:30am to be at the cables as early as possible (last year I started around 5:45am and there wasn't too much traffic at the cables and an overall very pleasant hike up with very little trail traffic).by Half Dome Hiker - General Discussion
