Quotebasilbop I'm assuming that by "along" you mean "through" the canyon. I would say it's a bit late in the season for three reasons: 1) There is no overnight parking on Tioga Road and none of the various busses are running, somewhat complicating transportation. 2) Overnight temperatures could freeze, resulting in icy conditions that could make the hike dangerous and theby Ohnivy-Drak - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
There are certainly quite a few aggressive, impatient drivers out there. I use the pullouts and let them all pass, particularly at night. Don't enjoy anyone following behind. Tailgating or not, either way it's annoying. However, the speeders don't compare to the truly reckless, mindless drivers. For instance, about a month ago I was caught behind a car where the driver and passenger were gby Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteDavidK42 Of course, this begs the question: if that's George Anderson on top of Half Dome, who took the picture? Anderson's first ascent was in Oct 12, 1875 @ 3PM. But according to the aforementioned Hutchings' book, the photo was taken by S.C. Walker in 1877. Anderson brought Walker and Hutchings along.by Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotechick-on True. Here's the big picture from 2011: In here you can see the "middle" tree and the tree above near where the engine is. My recommendation is to either hike to the engine and call it a win... or hike down to the cascade and go back up the "Lone Boulder" route. When in doubt, throwing in the towel is probably the right thing to do. Paraphrasing Ed Viesturs: "Summiting is optional, returning safely is mandatory." And while this is probably taking things too far for most adventures, using the "Everest 2PM" rule as a guideline isn't a bad idea either. QuoteParis92 I have reservations at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge next week through next weekend. Trying to summit Clouds Rest that weekend. Crap. Third year I've tried to summit CR and had a fire ruin the plans. I'm thinking this fire 'probably' will not be out by then. I need to cancel my tents by Thursday this week. Sad news. Many things could have happened, but I thought perhaps trying a shortcut back down to the Valley from North Dome was one of the likely scenarios. Just speculating. At least family and friends have some closure. Not all families get that - I still wonder what happened to George Penca, for instance. Probably gonna start from Elizabeth Lake, head up Althuski. Question is: once on that ridge/saddle, how difficult is it to go around Cockscomb to get the clean views of Matthes Crest? Or would it be better to drop down to Budd Lake area first, then back up? Or go down to Nelson, head west to Matthes Lake, then back north to the saddle between Comb and Echos? QuoteKatyAnderson I am very curious about this bus. According to this page it is not the Tuolumne Hiker bus that used to run just once a day between the Valley and Tuolumne for a fee of $12 or so. Instead it's a free bus with three or four runs per day. Exciting! This might be totally wrong, but I'm going to assume this is one of the benefits brought forth by the entrance fee hikes.
