I don't know why it might be closed, but a few years ago they changed that upper part from a use trail to a "real trail." We hiked it the day they completed the work, and they even had a ranger up there to inspect and gather responses. Frankly, it wasn't much better than a use trail, so maybe they've downgraded it again.by balzaccom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I am delighted that Val de Grace books is releasing my series of mystery novels set in the High Sierra--first book is out June 15. here's what they say about it: Paul Wagner has combined his love of story-telling with his love of the Sierra to write a mystery novel, Danger: Falling Rocks, featuring ranger Dan Courtwright. It’s fun, exciting, and a great choice for summer reading, whether youby balzaccom - General Discussion
Just back from five days of day-hiking in Kings Canyon, most of it out of Cedar Grove. We’d never really spent a few days just to focus on this area until now… We arrived the evening of Memorial Day, which meant that the crowds and had left, and the whole area had a rather subdued feeling to it. Sentinel Campground, except for one ugly incident (more on that below) was absolutely idyllicby balzaccom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yes...and it's not really a use trail. We saw a trail crew working on it a few years ago. I don't think they maintain use trails, usually .. And it's always a bit farther up the Cathedral Lakes/JMT trail than I expect. If you're not sure...that's not the use trail. Once on the use trail, you eventually come to a fork down by the creek. Take the left fork, across the creek, and continueby balzaccom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
One of the great delights of driving to the Sierra Nevada is passing through the Central Valley, with its many roadside stands of local produce. During the winter, most of these stands close down, or offer only a few vegetables. But during the summer the selection, quality, and pricing of the fruit is truly amazing. We've become addicted over the years. And the good news is that in this earlyby balzaccom - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

The Sierra Nevada is one of the most beautiful and accessible mountain ranges in the world. In addition to being out in nature, life on the trail is good exercise for the mind and is refreshing for the soul. I cannot speak from person experience yet, but all the reports I have seen so far say the bugs are minimal--probably because of the cold nights. That could change quickly!by balzaccom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We once witnessed a very educational confrontation between a ranger in Lassen NP and some campers who were loud, obnoxious, and causing a problem. The ranger noted their use of marijuana, and cited one of them for possession, which helped to settle them down considerably. But then the ranger pointed out that this was a federal offense, and required a hearing in federal court. At that pointby balzaccom - General Discussion

We took the last few days to do a little day-hiking and exploring in Sequoia National Park. We'd been there a few times before, usually in the Grant Grove area before heading down into Kings Canyon...but this time we were going to stay in Lodgepole--an area we hadn't visited before. We started with a picnic lunch in the Big Stump Picnic area...where a street sweeping machine decided that exactby balzaccom - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
