I'm not convinced this will work. I don't know much about Calcutta. But why would the idea be considered drastic for Yosemite and not for Calcutta? Aren't mosquitoes part of both's ecosystem and natural enviroment?by chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

One of my small regrets on my big Half Dome hike this summer was missing a gorgeous picture of a marmot basically posing for me on the Visor. The primary reason for wanting the picture was to post it for the "Marmot" guy and Chick-On. Alas, I fumbled with my camera too long and I missed the shot. This probably isn't directly addressing your question but there is one idea if you have access to a light bulb and not a wall outlet such as in the Curry Village tents. In that case you can get one of those light socket outlets that allow you to screw in a plug outlet and then screw in the lightbulb to that.by chicagocwright - General Discussion
I find this topic interesting. I voted for more beauty but also agree with the Plawrence sentiment that these things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. But after all, since this is a Yosemite website, I would be somewhat surprised if folks here were not willing to tolerate a few extra people. But I am curious about what people mean by solitude. I can find solitude or would consider itby chicagocwright - General Discussion

For the sake of argument: If you accepted the concept that climate change, human cause, etc is "unsettled science" then it is easier to understand the accusation that climate change is a "belief system" no different than someone who believes in whatever faith. It is similar to the arguments regarding Origin of Life. Creationists may argue that any given scientific theoryby chicagocwright - General Discussion
Quoteparklover In addition to the Long, long trailer, I remember another Lucille Ball - Desi Arnez movie that had a scene in Yosemite but can't find it. Desi played a biologist. Tann: I am disappointed that a Curry Pizza lover would so quickly abandon the cause because of a little line on the Deck. It's worth the wait! Parklover: In a moment of weakness I might admit to some hyperbole but I honestly do not understand the naysayers of the Curry Pizza Deck. It really is good pizza everytime I go. I never had seen a real thunderstorm growing up in California. Not until college in Tennessee and now living in Chicago did I ever see a big thunderstorm. The other troubling part of my question on whether or not it was snow clouds coming or thunderstorm clouds is that I've also seen the occasional ThunderSnow Storm here in Chicago. Have either of you hiked Mt. Dana in the past year? My understanding is that there is a significant improvement in the trail after the plateau and you no longer need to rely on line of sight. Basically, unless I am just confused, they did do all the work to create a usage trail but in some places it is relatively easy to lose. If I remember correctly, I think I managed to stay on trail mostby chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just making sure I understand: Are you saying the Grack is much more technical than Snake Dike? My understanding of Snake Dike is that the few pitches of Snake Dike are relatively difficult compared to the rest of the climb. The ending sections do end up being friction walks with long runouts of potential exposure. And Supertopo rates the Grack as a 5.6 (I was told it was a 5.7 while I waby chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

So my dad, mom and I have been discussing our Mt. Dana hike and I have a couple questions for anyone who may have done this hike in past years and re-done it more recently: 1. What "Class" scramble would you consider the last portion of the hike over the "false" summit and then up the final summit. Especially if one had managed to lose the "trail" and headed strby chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Great trip report. Sunrise trailhead definitely the fastest way. And I definitely agree about spending time on the summit. I was on a really long hike and I still made time to spend an hour up there and that time just flew by. Hey Chick-on we also did not find the sign. It took us 6 hours to get from Tenaya Lake to a short hike after Pywiack Cascades...before we decided to call it off and head up Airplane Gully.
