Here's a video that may be useful. It was apparently made by someone riding Tioga Road on a bicycle a week ago. Conditions are changing rapidly, of course.by druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks! Nice pictures and report. I was planning on doing that exact route on Nov 6, but a few inches of snow the previous day persuaded me to try something tamer.by druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hard to say for sure. If it's a person, though, the place where he's standing is about ten feet above the base of the tree to the left, which appears to be about 8x the height of the "person," which wouldn't be all that unusual of a tree height.by druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. If you go to http://www.xrez.com/yose_proj/yose_deepzoom/ (you'll also need to install the silverlight plugin) and zoom in on the Taft Point camera there's an excellent view of the Eagle Creek drainage. I couldn't spot any sign of a trail but it does look like you might be able to walk up the creek bed, albeit with some thrashing here and there. I hiked over it a couple of weeks ago. There are some pictures here in my July 29 reply to this post: http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,38137 More pictures here: https://picasaweb.google.com/108999114282976002248/RedPeakPassby druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteDavidK42 Along the way, you may spot a short trail that will take you to an overlook of the lower falls. It's a bit steep but easily managed and I wouldn't worry about having the boys do that (although I seem to recall that the overlook is pretty small so you may have to go a few people at a time). I can't remember if there's a sign marking this trail. Assuming that you are talking aboby druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Interesting. When I passed by the Merced Lake HSC on the afternoon of the 27th it didn't look all that close to being ready. When I was walking down Little Yosemite Valley the next morning four mule trains passed by headed the other direction. I just returned from doing a variation of your trip 1) above, staying at Hart Lakes instead of Buena Vista Lake but otherwise following your route more or less exactly. Buena Vista Crest and the Red Peak Fork were snow-free and the hiking was a delight (except for that spot of brushy talus on the Buena Vista Crest that you warned about and which I dropped down to avoid). Thanks for the waypointing advice -- sounds like an excellent idea. I'm glad to hear that Red Peak Pass isn't extremely hairy. I suppose if we are able to make it as far as Lower Ottoway we'll give it a go.by druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks a million for the info. It sounds like the crux will be the Merced Pass to Ottoway Lake creek crossings, assuming that the suncups don't wear us down first. The Buena Vista Crest looks like it will be much fun. We'll be flexible and save Red Peak Pass for another day if it starts to look like it will be too much of a slog to get up there.by druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Very nice pictures, thanks. I'm thinking of doing something similar to your Red Peak Pass route in a couple of weeks, if the high water crossings and snow are tolerable. It looks like you had mostly snow along the Buena Vista Crest traverse, but assuming the snow is mostly gone, would you anticipate anything harder than class 2 scrambling on this portion of your route? Thanks for the excellent hike suggestions and photos. I was in the Valley last Saturday with my family, looking to get away from the crowds a bit and we decided to do the Wawona tunnel hike you described. It was very enjoyable. The trail is now clear of snow all the way to Inspiration Point, although the views were actually nicer from a little spur trail to the left about half way up from tby druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I agree that it isn't usually a good idea to ride on roads open to cars, but you can get to (or very near) Yosemite Lodge, Curry Village, the Pines campgrounds, Happy Isles, Mirror Lake, the Ahwahnee and Yosemite Village without ever having to leave bike paths or roads closed to traffic.by druid - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
