Dontcha worry, Little Lake is still on my list, maybe in July when the skeeters are friendliest.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Want to do a 2-night trip next weekend and am thinking of a couple different options inside and outside Yosemite. One thing I have yet to cross off my list is Cathedral Lakes. Assuming permits won't be a problem--big assumption, I know--anyone know what the conditions are like that direction? I'm also looking at doing the White Wolf, Smith Peak, Aspen Valley loop. Never been to that area andby KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Don't want to encourage this, but you could just go up in the early evening or morning, after or before the rangers get there. Haven't gone up since the whole permit system began, but if I was in the area and really really really badly wanted to go up, that'd be the sneaky--but wrong--way I'd do it.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Eh, Big Lake? Everyone knows Little Lake is the place to be. Don't feel like sifting through all the maps right now, but it is interesting that the trail does not appear on the 1939 reprint Bridgeport 15' quad but does appear on the 1956 Matterhorn Peak 15' quad. I always wonder when I see this kind of stuff why surveyors chose to mark some seemingly unofficial trails--I'm assuming Littleby KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If you look under option 3, there's some information on the trail. Doesn't sound like it's too well maintained. I'm just planning a trip for this summer and got curious. I don't know when or where, but I saw a thread where it was discussed some time ago. Sounded like an interesting though more-trouble-than-its-worth type short cut to get from Barney Lake to the South Fork of Buckeye Creek.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've seen Little Lake acknowledged in a few threads here and there, but am wondering if anyone's been to it lately? The 15' shows a trail going by it, but from what I gathered from an old thread on another site, it's not much of a trail anymore.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Caltrans will do what it needs to do up to the National Park boundary, but no further barring funds from the Feds or an agreement to reimburse some portion of the work. Caltrans is strapped and District 10, which covers the Sierras from SR 88 to Yosemite, is its armpit.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Chick-on, what kind of camera do you use? Love these pictures (and the others you post). I ask because I just got a fancy new Sony for Xmas that takes 3D pics. It's smaller and lighter than my old Canon A590, but lacks a view finder, which I like using because it saves batteries. It also takes those fancy lithium ion batteries that cost a lot of money.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I know this topic has been covered previously, at least I think it has, but does anyone know the shortcut route from Lower Cathedral Lake to Tenaya? I recall reading somewhere--I think here but couldn't find it when I searched for it--about someone exiting Lower Cathedral per its outlet to Tenaya. As I remember it, they had some difficulties but eventually made it. People also mentioned a prefby KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Recently bought the Sawyer 3-way inline filter. Have yet to use it though. What makes it a POS, chick-on? The reviews are what convinced me it was a good idea. I found the pen to be a pain.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I know it's not as far north of 120 as some of the other great lakes pictured in this forum, and I know it's along a more popular route, but I think McGee Lake has a fine backdrop:by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Pick up some extra water at Bridalveil and camp at one of the points. If you go in early July, the water situation should be fine. In August, not so sure.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It's about 6 miles to Glen Aulin and another 3.5 or so to WW falls. That in itself will be a decent sized day--13 miles with the return trip to GA--especially if you're still acclimating to the altitude. Don't know what your total itinerary is, but as noted, if you want to hang out in the area an additional day, there's plenty of nearby camping. If you don't feel like going all the way to May Lake, there's plenty of camping in proximity to Glen Aulin. You can always camp at McGee Lake or, my preference, find a spot on the mountain (9134) between Glen Aulin and McGee Lake. You'll have killer views. That said, if you only plan to day hike, to May Lake you go.by KC - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So, some of the stuff like junction boxes etc. may or may not be eligible for the NRHP. It has to meet the criteria, which I summarized above. That said, if some of this stuff is eligible, I think it would make it more difficult to remove from a wilderness area--or even a non-wilderness area--simply because the park would have to consider effects to the historic property. Some of the old stuff is not only interesting, but has the potential to intersect with the National Historic Preservation Act as well. If it's associated with an important event, person, is an example of significant construction, or offers novel or new information about the past (archaeological sites typically), then it could be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
