It's better than the car campgrounds, and at times can be convenient and quiet, but it's best to have earplugs...just in case.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It was a big bear, the bear was growling, leaping on the can, and the can kept slipping away. Really pissed the bear off. I'm in the tent watching with a flashlight. The light seemed to annoy him more, so I turned it off. Finally the noise stopped when the can rolled down the hill. I thought I was going to have to hike out hungry, but I found the can the next morning a the side of the lake whby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Years ago, when bear canisters were a recent development, I had a bear spent a considerable amount of time attacking my bear can, which was about 20 feet from the tent. Although he scratched and put bite marks all over the old Garcia, he wasn't able to get it open. It made for a long night. I believe this was 1993, at Kearsarge Lakes. I still have that old bear canister. Now, I make sure whaby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Will I be thrown off the forum if I admit I used mine on a titanium bike lock?by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I frequently use the backpackers camp in Yosemite Valley. It's quite convenient. Last time I was there, I am happy to say, the rangers were checking to make sure people had backcountry permits. In the past it has sometimes been a fall out spot for parties- a pair of earplugs can come in handy. It's an easy walk down the bike path to the Ahwahnee if that interests you. I usually park at Cuby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Do you think this will be true in July of this year considering conditions.- I mean about water 1/2 mile before the final junction? I have a birthday hike planned in the second weekend in July- permits already obtained.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Very enjoyable trip report. Thank youby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
You might also plan to pick up your permit in the afternoon. The wilderness office is always less crowded in the afternoon than in the AMby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

The new route looks beautiful and challenging. I look forward to the trip report.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Nice route. When you hike day 7- Pate Valley, walk downhill toward the bridge- there is a good swimming hole there and it's likely to be hot or hike uphill about a mile or so, where there is a nice cascade and swimming hole. I agree with Chick-on, of course, about going up Matterhorn Canyon. Upper Matterhorn Canyon near Burro Pass Lower Matterhorn Canyon, your proposed route, also haby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Considering last years Meadows fire, you are not going to want to spend any time between Merced Lake and Little Yosemite Valley- see Chick-on's post & photo's here http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?17,77826,77826#msg-77826. The trial between Merced Lake and LYV is day use only, no camping.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Smedberg is nice, and has some good camping around the west side away form the trail. Then again, Benson is really special, the Benson Rivera.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Eight days is probably to long for that trip. You could save lot of food weight by doing it in less. A friend and I di it in a leisurely four nights a few years ago- One night near Vogelsang, then over Vogelsang Pass to camp near Merced Lake, and two nights in the little Yosemite Valley. We are slow middle aged women who live at sea level. If you cut off three days you could save about five pby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I find the bike is really helpful in the off season. I don't always have time to hike, but a round trip ride to work is almost 20 miles, and it allows me to keep from turning into a complete couch potato. Get outside and stay active.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Beautiful photos- as always. I would like to know what # 11 and 14 are. Thanksby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Lovely trip report. I camped along your "mirage" on my way up to the lake. Having been up there he same weekend it's interesting to see the alternative route. Thank you.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
That is a whole lot better than the early to mid-nineties. To hike the PCT was to pass many bags hanging from trees with the bottoms ripped out,or nylon ropes with no bag. When bear canisters first can out I had a bear attack mine for a long time at Kearsarge Lakes. I found it the next morning a few hundred feet below my camp at the side of the lake, scratches all down the sides, the lid allby lschaaf - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Will there be a day 14 trip report? Top of Whitney to the Portal? Thanks for the great series of trip report. I have been away, but have now caught up. Beautiful journey.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It is a Steripen traveler I got in a warranty exchange from the maker a couple of years ago, after I dropped the previous one at Lower Palisades Lake. This time it keep turning off early, even after I changed the batteries. Luckily I always carry a spare. Still lighter and easier than the Katadyn filter I carried for years.by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
O.K. , for those of us not in the know, what lake is that, and is it a different lake in the lower picture?by lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I had a trip report typed up, but somehow it just disappear into the neverland. So here is link to the pictures, with a little narrative on Flickr. It was a good trip,no smoke, mosquitoes, and not many people. Other than having to be aware of water sources I really can't complain. The route was Mono Meadows Trailhead - up the Buena Vista Trail to Buena Vista Lake then around the loop pasby lschaaf - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
