This one is a little more rugged, but try hiking up the gully on the north end of Medlicott Dome, then along the top past Lake of the Domes. Follow the dome top all the way south over the top of Dozier Dome and then take the climbers trail back to highway 120. Detour to Cathedral Lakes is optional. The top of Medlicott is a uniquely beautiful place.by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteKC I just can't shake my good 'ole Asolo Fugitive boots. In fact, as I was climbing up the terrible loose rock, steep, screed-up trail on the east side of Signal Peak near Emigrant Gap this weekend, I couldn't help but wonder how people could handle it in anything but boots. You guys ever wish you had boots when on crappy to non-existent trails? Can't say that I ever miss boots... I didby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Would have given you credit too for TR's about getting out in the early season if anyone on BPL would know who I was talking about. Yep. I just wear lightweight (11oz per shoe) Scarpa trail runners. Far more comfortable and easier on your knees than boots. My Gore-tex boots (which are also only like 14oz, from inov-8) only come out in deep snow. Usually even wear the trail runners snowshoeingby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the photos. Climbing Lyell next weekend so the current conditions update is helpful. And they were beautiful too of course.by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Was in Montana all week (doing this), so just saw this thread. For June-September, my base pack weight is usually in the 11-12 lb range with a bear can, before food and water. Typically carry about 1/2 to 1L of water depending on availability, and about 1.5 lbs of food per day. So a typical weekend trip starting at the trailhead my pack is around 17-18 lbs. Wife doesn't have to carry the bearby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Cherry Creek is awesome. Kinda like walking through the glaciology chapter of a geology textbook. There's more glacier polish per square mile there than I've seen anywhere. Thanks for sharing. A few pix from last time I went down it:by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Huh... interesting. I had no idea of the history in that area (dam across Frog Creek??) I'll have to go that way and poke around next time I head past Eleanor. About the Frog Creek crossing... we were actually trying to get a little bit more creek crossing experience for a trip to Montana in May. Last time when the water was too high I just backtracked a little on the trail and followed the 5by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
What's the story with the cabin? I didn't know there was an old trail or a cabin around there. Last time I was at Frog Creek before this trip it was too high to cross ... We looked downstream about 1/4 mile trying to find a way over ... Didn't see a trail of any kind but there is a drop dead gorgeous view of the lake.by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yep. Your Vernon Xmas album gave me the idea for this trip. It was dry all the way from Eleanor to nearly Frog Creek (a little water from seasonal creeks in a few places.) It didn't feel at all like winter out there... Hot during the day and never got cold at night. I sure confused the rangers when I called Groveland to get a permit... I guess they don't usually give out Lake Vernon permits tby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I've mostly lurked on this forum so far (don't have much time for posting these days) and have gotten lots of useful info and trip planning resources, especially from Chick-on. So here's some pix from this weekend as a thank-you. A friend and I did the Lake Vernon loop starting at Cherry dam this weekend. About 47 miles total according to the gps. We did 17 to Vernon on the first day, planning orby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Saturday night my thermometer read 11F at around 6AM... That's pretty darn cold. Even if it was warmer the night before... being on the very top sounds coooold. I usually try to find a grove of trees or something for shelter. Between this TR, the one from MooseTracks, and knowing there werent even any tracks on Tioga Rd... I want to go to the meadows even more now. Might have to take some timby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yep... That was us. The skis were mostly dead weight as there were only a few pockets of powder. Good trip for wildlife though... Saw a huge bobcat down by Happy Isles sauntering down the road. And on our way up on Saturday, we stopped to take a break and a fox casually walked up the hill just next to the trail near us. We followed his tracks through the snow up the trail on the rim. Thanks for the pics. I think you guys passed my wife and I going down Snow Creek. Definitely not cold or breezy for us Saturday night in front of the wood fire.by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
