First many thanks to Basilbop for the earlier trip report! It reminded us of some day hike and short overnight trips we've wanted to do. We wanted a "rest" weekend before our 4 day backpack holiday weekend, so we met a friend at Olmsted Point and hiked to Mt. Watkins. Very nice trip! Wanted to go skiing up around Ireland Lake and Vogelsang, but it just didn't happen. The first problem was that the conditions made travel difficult, the second is that my hiking partner has been going more and more lightweight during summer hiking, and this was his first "winter" overnight trip this season. Hi! My hiking partners and I did the Red's Meadow to Onion Valley section of the JMT. 9 Days and wish we took longer. A couple of good things about starting at Red's heading south: acclimation and acclimation. The elevation starting out is moderate, and the ups and downs the first couple of days really help acclimate to higher elevation.
