The Phoenix is located on the western side of Cascade Falls--west side of Tamarack Creek Bridge, (1.7 miles west of Hwy 120/140 junction). I believe they are the first falls you see after going through the Arch Rock entrance. For those interested: "60 Minutes" cameras capture a feat never documented before: viewers will see Alex Honnold scale a 1,600-ft. rock wall using nothing more than his hands and feet. Cameras strategically placed along a sheer rock wall in Yosemite National Park put viewers right beside Honnold as he makes his free-solo climb of Sentinel, a feat never done before. Are you thinking of "High Ice" starring David Janssen? I think from 1980. The story involves a forest ranger played by Janssen and an Army officer who clash on how best to handle a search-and-rescue operation to save three climbers stranded after an avalanche pins them on a ledge in the Cascade Range. One of my favorites is from 2008--North Face--Based on a true story and set inby Jalan - General Discussion
From Half Dome this year--Cascades reminded me of a fire hydrant on a city street during a hot summer day in Ohio. Lone pine tree can barely be seen (below the pool). From this angle, looks like the path to Olmstead point is an easier route--reason #14 why I should not hike alone.by Jalan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

EEEK already had me interested in taking another trip this year to YNP simply to travel 800 feet or so to Sierra Point (and now interested in going up the Eagle Creek Watershed) when Norway now looks a bit pleasing. Plenty of pics and info on the Pulpit Rock--here are a few from flickr--http://www.flickr.com/photos/worldwalker/64943319/in/photostream/. I took Muir in the morning on my way to HD simply because I had no interest in taking a shower when climbing Vernal (on way down, looking forward to it). I thought there were some good views on my way to Nevada (and while mileage was longer, time likely the same). Morning to HD I loved this portion of the walk. It reminded me of the weeping wall on the Going to the Sun Road (however,by Jalan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

When walking up 4 mile in June, ran into two bears on the trail--caught me a bit by surpise and with little light (abt 6:45am or so), not the best picture (hiker that caught up to me said he saw 4):by Jalan - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Hotrod, you make an interesting point. Look at the fence at lower falls, not much different from that of Vernal. Indeed, about 20-30 feet from the river, the fence ends. When there last year, I remember going back up with my son (no fence to our left), when a woman fell coming down--she was on my left, close to the river. That aside, I do not believe there are many people attempting to get iby Jalan - General Discussion
This one made me laugh. Looks like what a politician would wear when traveling to a National Park. Brink of Lower Falls is not too far from the rim--but a tie--could you not loosen it a bit? http://www.yellowstone.co/wwwboard/messages/8791.htmby Jalan - General Discussion

Forgot to post this last week. I was watching Letterman and Johnny Galecki of the "The Big Bang Theory" told a story about recently being struck by lightning while on a trail in Yosemite. Agree with EZ. In June, did both the Falls and 4 mile (4 mile has better views and ice cream at the top--Falls has the falls at the top and if you go to the Point, you get closer to Half Dome). I generally hike alone (though often find company throughout the hikes). Was out the door by 5:15 each morning as I walked from Curry to the trailheads. No issue with the sun/heat on either going up.by Jalan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Whether time to weigh in--who knows? Being an attorney, I am sure some would jokingly ask why I am not with a grizzly in Yellowstone (at least I am not a politician in DC). I cannot imagine what the family members are now going through. I would imagine that like them I would look for someone to blame--looking to make some sense of what occurred. While I understand what york is saying (and to be honest I think most people on this site are more into hiking/camping than sight seeing), I, as most people, do have issues with drivers ignoring those around them. I was there on June 25 (Saturday) as well. At 5:00 pm, with traffic not moving (and when I say not moving--people were out of their cars standing and talking), I asked the park ranger how long of a wait it would be for those looking to leave. The response was 2-3 hours. Fortunately, I had parked my car on Wed and did not get into it until Sunday morning. Perhaps much of the traffic has to doby Jalan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
