Thanks for posting this. Moose is one of my favorite lakes. Such a spectacular view of the mountains to the east. Plus it has a sandy beach!by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We must have avoided the crowds by going on a weekday, and you're right about the thick air. It was nice not having to deal with the faint headache that I sometimes get at the higher altitudes of Yosemite.by carl_spackler - General Discussion
Just returned from a trip to North Cascades NP in WA. No crowds, no entrance fee, very scenic (more of a "sound of music" look with snow capped mountains jutting out of green forests and meadows). If you're ever up in that part of the country, it may be worth a look. It is a 3-4hr drive from Seattle. This is the view from our lodge on the east side of the park. Went on a day hike to taft point this weekend and saw this. Didn't stick around long enough to see if they made it all the way across on a later attempt, but it was fun to watch from so close. The rope walker said he could walk this same length of rope on the first try between two trees five feet off the ground. Something about a 1000 ft drop and an elevated heart rate which made Taft poby carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Reading someone else's report (maybe Basilbops) inspired me to try this loop out, and I'm glad I did.by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I went on this 3-day trip a few weeks ago. We spent the first night at Pear Lake. A good sized lake nestled below Alta Peak. It was a new moon, so the Milky way was clearly visible. If you want to see stars, plan your trip for a moonless sky. A spectacular view is seen when cresting the final granite slab on the ascent to Moose lake. I did that loop (starting from Glacier Point) with my brother last September. Our plan was: -Make it to lower Ottoway on day 1 -Washburn on day 2 -LYV on day 3 -hike half dome and out to GP on day 4 We made it to Lower Ottoway on day 1 but were pretty spent. On day 2 we came up about 4 mi short of Washburn. Even though the distance from Ottoway to Washburn looks comparable or shorter thanby carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Just got back from a weekend trip to Tuolumne Meadows and Gaylor Lake. We stayed at the TM tent cabins. They were roomy, and we fortunately snagged one next to the river. Two minor inconveniences: you couldn't "prepare food" anywhere on the premises (we made the short drive to Lembert Dome parking lot to cook), and bear boxes for food storage are next to the parking lot a hundred yarby carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks again for all the advice. We'll keep baby hydrated and look for symptoms of altitude sickness, while being prepared to bail out early if things get too hairy.by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
thanks for the advice, Yes, according to the TM lodge website, "Each tent will accommodate up to four people - and comes fully equipped with beds and linens, candles for lighting, a wood burning stove and wood". Kinda like a hotel room in the wilderness. We'll be sure to watch for ear trouble, hot stoves, and cold temps in the middle of the night.by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Anyone ever bring a baby up into the high country? We have two nights reserved at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge this weekend and will be introducing a 7 mo old to Yosemite. I’m hoping the tent cabins at the TM Lodge will more easily accommodate an infant and offer convenient mosquito protection. There are also a number of short day hikes nearby that might be easy to bring a little one on (Lembert Domeby carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Very nice animation. I took a picture of the shadow made by a tree during peak occlusion (in bay area). You can see the crescent shape of the eclipse duplicated many times in the shadow. The gaps in the canopy of the tree must have been acting like many pinhole cameras.by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I went to Seki last June and enjoyed it very much. We stayed at Sheep Creek Campground in Kings Canyon which was a nice launching point for attractions in that area. We hiked from roads end, past mist falls to lower paradise and back as a nice long day hike. The Sequoia trees are amazing and seemed to be bigger than the ones in mariposa grove. Upper Youngs lake is the only one I've visited. It's not super remote but has a high photogenic factor. We were there when the snow was still melting up in those parts. This added nice splashes of white to the photos, but also meant that the mosquito vermin were out and about.by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

It was a great weekend to be outdoors. As far as skeeters go, it varied with location. Ottoway lakes was pretty clear, triple peak fork river had lots of flies not too many bloodsuckers, lost valley below merced lake was pretty bad, but maybe our camp site choice was not the best (in a wooded area out of the breeze).by carl_spackler - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Went on a 4 day 50 mile loop over red peak pass this weekend. It was a great way to see a good variety of what yosemite has to offer, but was more strenuous than I expected. Lower ottoway lake was placid and full of fish. There were quite a few groups camped up there on thursday. These are the upper ottoway lakes from near the top of red peak pass. Balza, Originally I hoped to climb Mt Conness, but when I started to feel the altitude at 10200 and developed quarter sized blisters, I figured 12600 Mt conness would be too much. My dad (he's 66) and I did Clouds Rest the previous day and were both pretty spent. QITNL Here's some more shots from Young Lake if you're interested. Went to Young Lakes from Toulumne Meadows this weekend and really enjoyed the scenery. Blue skies and perfect weather. The blood suckers were out, and a head net was very useful. Upper young lake. I went to King's Canyon a few weeks ago and enjoyed Roaring River Falls, Zumwalt Meadows, and Mist Falls/Lower Paradise. Roaring River Falls is about 300 yards off the main road through Kings canyon. Not really a hike, more a point of interest. Zumwalt Meadows is a flat ~2mi walk through meadowland and streams surrounded by granite walls. We ran into a golden bear there. I did see your earlier post and was hoping the hot weather we've been getting lately would be enough to thaw them out, but I guess it takes awhile to melt the whole enchilada.
