It's not the "dense shaded forest" you've asked for, but I can't recommend dispersed camping in the Alabama Hills enough. It is our favorite car camping spot along the 395 when heading up to the Eastern Sierra. Waking up to views of the rocks with the Sierra peaks in the distance is like none other. And it's free.by LBFam - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Congrats on the proposal! I proposed to my fiancee a little over a year ago on our backpacking trip along the Teton Crest Trail in the Grand Tetons. I did it on of all places "Death Canyon Shelf" right after we packed up and were ready to head out of our campsite on morning three. It had the most spectacular view of Death Canyon and the Tetons in the background. We are now set toby LBFam - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Great advice. While they are not necessarily "outdoors types" they have been looking forward to going hiking in Yosemite, so I think they'll tough out some rain. Especially if after the hike they'll get hot cocoa and smores! I'd love to see a dusting of snow on the valley floor and hope it happens. Would make for some wonderful photos.by LBFam - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
A bit bummed about it being on the weekend as well. Have a trip planned for this weekend and bringing my two nieces for their first visit to Yosemite. Was hoping to get a few good hikes in with them but I'm sure they'll still have a great time - albeit a bit colder than anticipated. Any suggestions on things to do with teenagers in the valley during a storm with possible snow?by LBFam - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteredpakotasea Awesome! I'll be doing a 3-nighter through this area in early August, except we'll be heading in via Shadow Creek to Ediza, followed by 1000 Island, and out via High Trail. I was thinking of spending 2 nights at Ediza and 1 at 1000 Island, but not sure about details or day hikes. Would you recommend doing otherwise? Thanks. Both areas were absolutely beautiful, and have plby LBFam - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This is my first attempt at a trip report, so bear with me as I try to put our trip into words (and photos). My brother and I (both fairly new to backpacking - but not to hiking in general) went on a 4-night trip to the Ansel Adams Wilderness on 6/30-7/4. Never having been to this area of the backcountry we made sure to study past trip reports from all over the internet (there are plenty toby LBFam - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I hiked the Pohono trail via McGurk Meadow to Stanford Point (with stops also at Dewey and Crocker Points) this past weekend and it was practically snow free, only a few small patches on the trail that were easily avoided. The views once at the rim were outstanding at all three points. The previous day we did a short hike from Tunnel view to Inspiration Point with a side trip to Artist's Point.by LBFam - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

QuoteTechieSteveYes, that was probably me at the gas station on Sunday morning! I was there at about 8am, I think. Grabbed a great breakfast burrito, and a big turkey sandwhich for lunch by Walker lake. I would have politely refused any lifts, Well I wouldn't have been able to give you a lift anyways as the back seat of my jeep was removed and the cargo area was full of gear. Did you start your trip on Sunday the 7th? If so, I think I saw you at the gas station and then walking along the 395. We left Tuolumne on Sunday morning and stopped for breakfast at the gas station. I remember seeing a lone backpacker outside packing up and leaving while we ate. And then saw the same guy walking along the 395. Was wondering where he was headed. We saw that sailboat (or a sailboat) at Tenaya lake while driving by over the July 4th weeknd. It wasn't in the water but on the beach on the east end of the lake.by LBFam - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I just got back from 4 days in Tuolumne and the mosquitos were not too bad at all. They were definitely around but seemed to be much less than last July when I was up there. I did treat some of my clothing with permethrin which I think helped as well while sitting around the campsite and on trail. Didn't have to use any deet at all. Long sleeves and pants were enough, even went with short sleeveby LBFam - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotethechief I have seen this same thing in Bryce Canyon as well. I saw them in Bryce Canyon a couple of weeks ago. Probably 50-75 stacks of all sizes in a small area between Sunrise and Sunset Points. Quotechick-on OK I should have said this: I do not have a Smart Phone. People who have a smart phone should respond and say how it works for them. For hiking in the backcountry my recommendation is hands down the eTrex 20 or 30. Maybe basil will respond since he carries a Nexus 7 which is smart phoney like. Have you used both the 20 & 30? Quotechick-onThat would be a really nice loop... up Budd... over to Upper and back down. It's very simple xcountry. The saddle is very open with stellar views of Cathedral. Quoteeeek QuoteLBFamWhat about out of Idyllwild? Any suggestions from there? The Devils Slide trail is the best there. But there is a day hiker quota so pick up your permit early. From the saddle you do easily do Tahquitz Peak. You can also hike from the tram station to Idyllwild (two routes, both good) if you have someone to pick you up. I was lucky enough to get a site right at 7am for early June. The site I got said it was "rv only" with no option of choosing tent in the equipment drop down. I am hoping there are no issues with using a tent in that site. It is in the last loop of Upper Pines. We'll only have a small 3 man tent, so hopefully there will be space to pitch it. I hiked this trail this past Sunday. Wasn't planning on doing it but after climbing on top of Pothole Dome we decided we'd take this route down to the footbridge and then hike back up the Glen Aulin trail to Lembert Dome where our car was parked.
