I did not see the gate on the way down from Nevada. Maybe it was further down the path and we just did not get to it, or maybe we were in the wrong spot. There were a few people coming up what I believed to be the beginning of JMT and after asking if it was open and getting a no we just turned around and headed back across the bridge to go down the Mist. I knew it would probaly not be open soby muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yes, they have it closed off due to the rockfall. Thankfully there was someone come back out up at Nevada Fall that we asked whether it was closed or not and he said that it was, as we were going to attempt to go down from there and there were not any signs saying it was closed for the way down. When we got to Clark Point, the gate there was shut for anyone attempting to head up JMT.by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for all the advice. We wound up doing the Sentinel Dome and Mist Trail hikes, on seperate days. We did the Sentinel Dome hike later in the day, around 4pm, and had the entire trail to ourselves, did not see even one other person. There was a couple snowy spots but overall pretty much clear and dry. On the second day we hiked up the Mist Trail, the river was ripping, got completely soakby muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
This is all great information, thanks for the feedback. We are going to walk up the Mist Trail, and, where it is open, come down the John Muir Trail. Thanks again, this is what makes this forum so awesome.by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Did not think the Panorama Trail would be open, would like some feedback. My niece and nephew are in from Michigan, first time in Yosemite. We had planned on hiking up and down the Mist Trail, but now considering starting at the top and hiking down the Panorama. Which hike would you take them on? Also, which one is more physically demanding? Thanks.by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Looks like they have reached Olmsted Pt. Do they plow from both directions, and meet at that point, meaning that they have finished with the plowing and just have to check for avalanche risks? Also, does anyone know how long it usually takes them to do the avalanche check?by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
They are pretty good at responding to people's questions, and have had more than a few asking about Glacier Point and Tioga Rd.by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yes, they have started plowing, they announced that on Facebook. I have found that is the best place to track them, as the website is harder to update than simply posting an update on Facebook. They started a couple days ago. They also said they would have an update shortly to Glacier Point road on the plowing process.by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Do you happen to know when Hwy 89 usually opens for the season?by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
La Nina is bringing in warm weather this weekend, in the mid-80's in Reno. I assume it will be warm in the park as well. Because of this I am predicting May 1. My nephew is flying in for a trip down there the first week of May, so this is more wishful thinking than an actual prediction, but it doesn't hurt to be optimistic right. Either way we will be heading down there, I just want him to beby muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

From what I have read, they normally start plowing mid-April correct? Does anyone have inside info on when the plowing will start this year? With less snow pack I would assume that it will open earlier than usual.by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the updates, I haven't had the best of luck with yaktrax in the past, but we are looking into the Kahtoola's. We hit the Cathedral Lakes trail today, it was clear enough to follow but definitely had a decent amount of snow in areas, the Kahtoolas would have helped. Tioga Lake had ice skaters on it, which shocked us but it must have been frozen enough as a dozen or so people were out thby muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

If we wanted to do either the Cathedral Lakes or Gaylor Lakes hike tomorrow would we need snow shoes or would hiking boots be sufficient?by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Earlier I mentioned taking a look at the Ten Lakes hike because it was shorter. I had a brain relapse and meant to say take a look at Catherdral Lakes. Sorry about that. So, if you are pressed for time, Cathedral Lakes is a beautiful hike, and it is about 3-4 miles shorter than the Glenn Aulin hike. It is defintely worth considering if you are not sure if you have the time or are looking foby muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That is good advice from eeek on taking into account the time. The Glen Aulin hike is beautiful, but it is a long one. If you have time constraints take a look at the hike to Ten Lakes. It is a wonderful hike as well, and just not quite as long. Good luck!by muirman - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
