Hi, this is JRinGeorgia's brother responding from his account. Thank you chick-on for creating this post. And thanks to all of you for your heartfelt and loving words. Yosemite was a special place for JRinGeorgia, but it was his whole Yosemite/backpacking community that really stood out. Much Peace and Love to you all!by JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteksllxmfcai QuoteJRinGeorgia Don't know if you've seen it, I posted a detailed trip report on the RPP loop, found here: https://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?17,85687. You can begin to develop this sense of the terrain over just a few days on the trail. On my most recent trip in the first day or two I couldn't necessarily "read" the terrain, but after just a few days I found myself understanding where the trail would be because the lay of the land made it obvious to my mind. I found an amazing campsite on one of my last nights from a quick glance up fby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'll caution you against using a topo map as showing where you may or may not find a few square feet flat enough for camping -- an area that shows topo lines spread apart could be sloping everywhere, and an area with tight topo lines could have benches and ledges that make great camping spots. Topo gives you a sense of the overall land topography, not necessarily a proper campsite.by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Thanks for the feedback everyone. In researching this trip I actually had a hard time finding a lot of detail about parts of it, so that's one reason I wanted to put together a more thorough TR, hope it's helpful to someone in the future. Chick-on, thanks for the beta about this trip, that helped me a lot, esp Volunteer Peak. Would love to see some TRs from you and BB when you find civilizatioby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

This is the continuation of my trip report of the Benson-Matterhorn loop, which I did July 18-24, 2021. I ran up against the length limit for this forum so had to post by trip report in three parts. Testing: (main drag in Bridgeport) So as you can see, I can successfully post pics (linked from Google Photos) but the images are too big for the screen. How to get them to fit? I'd like to put up a trip report with lotsa pics. EDIT: I now see where the photo image code includes pixel dimensions and you can just edit those, sticking to the same ratio of dimensions (for 16:9 that's a faby JRinGeorgia - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Assuming their wilderness permit starts on 7/15, they either will have to ride up that evening and then hike out as the sun sets or arrive on 7/14, get permit in the Valley, then ride up and stay in the backpacker's campground.by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I don't believe you can post photos directly into this forum. Instead, the photo must be hosted somewhere out on the web, and when you are compiling a message here you can click the image button to insert the URL of the desired image.by JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Great TR and photos. Loved that area as well when I went through there in 2016, despite altitude sickness. "I" don't mind the sentences starting with "I" -- it is about what you did on a solo trip, after all. Don't forget that only 60% of each trailhead's quota are reservable ahead of time, the other 40% are held for walk-ups. The walk-ups can be issued starting at 11am the day before entry date. So, if you can get to the park a day early you have an excellent chance of nabbing the permit you want. And, with a backpacking permit you can stay in one of the backpacker's campgrounds the night before entrby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

What I understood is that the contract the park service had with DNC specified that DNC would legally defend the trademarks that the park service owns. So if someone printed a t-shirt that said Ahwanee Hotel without a license/permission, it was the park service's trademark that was violated but DNC's liability to pay for lawyers to sue. I'll chime in too... I'm aware that there are random spots off the trail as you approach the arête where you could camp off the shoulder of CR, just not familiar with anything specific, go with what nwhkr said. In LYV you have to camp in the designated area and there are no views from there.
