Chick-On, Thanks for the great pics, we had a good time even with the plans all fubar'd. A bad day in YNP is better than a great day just about anywhere else, we'll have to come back and finish the trip -- and find out what kind of tree that one is...and that one... Yes! Daughter and I both remember exactly when we crossed paths. My daughter actually thought you were a park ranger, your clothing has similar style and coloring and your hat had an "official" look to it. Whereas we probably looked like a couple of smooth-palmed city slickers Next time we'll have to stop and properly introduce ourselves. Thanks all. TOT, I think that water flow was temporary from the recent rains, it should have receded within a few days. Scap, not sure you folks could have helped us much, she wasn't able to hold much of anything down for several days after that. I had the chance to take this new free shuttle this past week. First off, it isn't just a hiker's bus, it has a big sign in the window "hiker and tour shuttle." It's clearly intended for anyone and everyone who wants free transportation between the low and high country, not just hikers or backpackers. The bus is nice, it's a regular "tour" bus with cushioned reclining seatsby JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I was just there, and the tables all looked about the same. I know we had the same size table in the Valley backpacker's campground as we did in the TM backpacker's campground. I would put the dimensions at more like 3x7 or 8, though I wasn't thinking of their specific size/measurements when we were there. The bench seats go along for about 5-6' and then the table continues on one side for aboutby JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey everyone, I brought my 14 year old daughter to Yosemite last week for her first extended backpacking trip. She finally begain to enjoy backpacking last summer when her summer camp took a trip on the Appalachian Trail, so I've been planning this YNP trip for us for the better part of a year. But, it didn't turn out like we planned -- the TV Guide description would be Daddy-Daughter trip not toby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

A couple I can chime in on: Pohono west of Taft -- nice trail, lots of forest punctuated with about 4 stunning overlooks. Almost no views along the trail other than these overlooks. From Taft you will descend to Bridalveil Creek then up to Dewey Point, great views of El Cap and the Cathedral Rocks. Then Crocker and Stanford Points, similar views as from Dewey but a little further west. The desby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Bring a pair of lightweight grippy gloves, like the the throwaway nitrile gloves you can find at Home Depot and such for a few bucks. Quoteags1) With bears (at least one) so smart as to toss canisters over the edge at Snow Creek, how does one protect food there? Just make sure someone else's canister is closer to the edge than yours... Seriously, only way I can think of is to find a way to corral the canister with large rocks and downed trees and such, not a tight fit that might allow the bear to get some leverage but jusby JRinGeorgia - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. There are lots of other 4-6 day itineraries, too many to mention. You've picked a good one. I did nearly that same trip, plus more, last year. Yes permits are required. Odds of getting permits for 5 -- depends on what day of the week and especially in early July if you are straddling the July 4th holiday. The application allows you to indicate alternate trailheads so don't be fixated on enteriby JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Yes, Wildcats. I have some other trailrunners that I like but are Gore-tex, and I thought I might be fording some streams so wanted shoes that would drain and dry better. They were very comfy and light. I intended to a soft get ice cream at the grill but the line was ridonkulous so I just went into the store and got a pre-packaged from their little ice cream cooler. May Lake was quiet enough for me. No one was rowdy in the campground, but definitely not solitude -- there was constant traffic back and forth to the water and outhouse, etc. I don't hear too well in one ear, so I can just put my good ear in the pillow and don't hear nuthin' ;-).by JRinGeorgia - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteJustKeepWalkingI think maybe the pic for Register is mis-labeled? Register doesn't have a bridge and can be a nasty crossing with high water. The one just before (if heading up-canyon) is Rodgers and has a bridge. Looks like the Register Creek waterfall at the crossing was dry.Hmmm, well I'm going by Schaffer.
