Happy Birthday to the Bird Man! I wonder how old he is in chicken years? He is one of a kind Well, at most two of a kind. Good to see you guys are still having lots of fun. I haven't been on the forum much, have been climbing a lot, but I'm looking forward for "the backpacking season" to start anew this year and catch back up with all of you. Especially Dale, since now that heby AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Glad you guys had fun. I might end up at Tilden in July to do some fishing... location is still TBD though. I always assumed the walk in past the WF Walker was long and sandy with lots of horse dookie because of the pack station.... looks pretty nice in your pics though.by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This was a really fun trip, good to meet you Steve. Matterhorn Pass and Horse Creek were a lot of fun. That's one of my favorite ways to exit the Sierra. Lots of good memories from that canyon, plus it's good hiking just about back to the trailhead. No smoke or anything - I think that came from a filter on Steve's camera. Fortunately we were pretty much completely unaffected by any fires.by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Very cool! I need to go back to Cherry... only time I've been there was 2013. That glacier polish is about the best I've seen anywhere.by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Hmm, if I wasn't busy this weekend, I'd strongly consider driving over 108 up the east side of 120, park at Tioga Pass, and going from there.by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

How was the Trailstar with three people in the snow? Did you have it pitched the same way at Table Lake? The handful of times I've had mine in the snow the space inside went way down and I had to pitch the door low to keep the white stuff from blowing in...by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotechick-on Good call on not bringing the neoprene socks... it woulda blew up your pack weight limit. QuoteJustKeepWalking Are those Dirty Girl Gaiters? I had a pair once... but my friend fell in love with them and they were brand new, so I gave them to her. I have been meaning to get another pair, but haven't yet. And with the bushwhacking content going up, might hold off a tad more with my totally not stylish old nylon gaiters. I really want a pair for my local hikes, though! Yep, dirtyby AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteJustKeepWalking Oooh, which neoprene socks do you use??? I've worried about getting too hot in them and blistering... Do u use with liners or regular hiking socks underneath? Or against skin? I haven't played enough with them... I've got NRS Hydroskins. They are quite warm so I only wear them in the spring when walking through lots of cold water / creek crossings / ankle-deep slush. But thby AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I do have amazing gaiters... But for cold wet snow I usually bring neoprene socks. I had 'em in the car but the glorious forecast on Thursday morning made me decide to leave them there. Would have been nice to have in my lightweight non-waterproof trail runners if I did hike out with you guys in the snow. QuoteJustKeepWalking You weren't crashing! Best to stay inside where it's warm and dry and the bears won't eat you. Nobody wants wet flippers. From back when we had water (sort of) Quotechick-on QuoteAndrewF Wow! The snow looks amazing! On the one hand, I'm sad I missed the snowy views, on the other hand I'm glad I walked out with dry feet Thanks for letting me crash your trip! It's been about a month since I've managed to get my butt out to the Sierra, but last weekend I mountain biked to Mississippi Lake with a friend of mine. Coe is definitely a tough place to go biking...we spent most of Saturday pushing our bikes up hill, but at least got to ride some nice single-track on the way back on Sunday. A few more for fun The ice was pretty much done after Bunnell... so on the bright side I didn't have to carry crampons the next 30 miles... my pack was 22 lbs full up at the trailhead with the snowshoes strapped to the back...by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
It was a little sketchy. Not something I would recommend to other people to do, but it felt OK when I did it. I tested the traction of my snowshoes out on the ice with the other foot firmly planted on terra firma and it seemed OK. Didn't slip at all. This ice was not so friendly...walked around this one:by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
