Quotechick-on Quotedqniel Wow. Incredible light in that picture. The composition and lighting is already stunning, and it could easily be a marketable print if a higher quality camera was used to take it (it's only downfall is the smudging of textures and lack of sharpness). Did you take that? Any picture I post I have taken, otherwise it will either be obvious I didn't (like old photos), orby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
My GPS took me on a volcanic ash "road" with pits in it big enough to swallow/flip cars when I was in the southwest. It claimed that it was paved. I turned around before it got bad, but it was a cool path so my friends and I hiked on it. Had we gone much further while driving we probably wouldn't have been able to turn around and could have gotten the car stuck, or worse. It's sadby dqniel - General Discussion
Also miraculous at turning your bones to dust Great drug for short-term use though. It's gotten me over poison oak and ivy a few times when I was a little kid and had it all over my hands, face, arms, and legs.by dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Or, if you use Firefox (I'm not sure if other browsers have similar add-ons), you can use FxIF. If you right click an image you can bring up the EXIF information when available. Very handyby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
It'll be a toasty hot hike at that time of year. That's when I did it, and I should have been better prepared in terms of conditioning. Too much heat for my out-of-shape body, and I felt miserable because of it. I am a young guy too, so hopefully people that go realize the difficulty if they're not used to long, hot hikes.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Telephoto shots like your first two generally lack contrast because of lens issues in combination with air quality issues. I find that the "auto levels" in Photoshop and other tools is usually too heavy-handed and makes it look unnatural. What I do in such a situation is duplicate the layer, apply auto colors and auto levels to the duplicated layer, and then adjust the opacity of theby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

I have wayyyyy too many Painted Desert pictures. I'll be through them soon, though. The ones I took before leaving were much better, so at least they're getting better instead of worse as I'm going through these. And yes, Craig (the guy in the TMNT shirt) wore that t-shirt a lot on that trip. We all wore a lot of the same shirts I think, not many laundry opportunities.by dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Well, when I say my dad didn't have the proper gear, I mean he had open-toed sandals I think I'll just post one picture per post so that less pictures get loaded per page. That way people don't have as much scrolling and loading to do for the updates? Seems like that would work. I don't want to clutter up the whole photography section with threads dedicated to myself :pby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
Quotechick-on Reminds me of doing a little video during my hike up Guadalupe Peak in Texas. So windy that it was driving me crazy, and the noise it makes with the cheap microphones integrated into cameras is unparalleled in annoyance. Very pretty location, though.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotehotrod4x5 Quotedqniel Isn't it man-made as well?Owens lake? Nahh, unless you mean the dry lake bed being man made and the subsequent partial flooding that the DWP is required to do to keep them dust storms at bay, ya that part is man made. No, the "Dirty Socks" spring. I looked it up and found out it is. Natural spring, but the lake/pond was man-made.by dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
Is that just underneath Unicorn? Seems awfully similar to: Might be my favorite experience in the park... It's neat to see it still under snow. Beautiful pic. I didn't get to go all the way up there when I returned the following year in May because my father didn't have the right kind of shoes for going up the trail in snow.by dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
I have been really busy with school the past week, but my last class of the semester was tonight so I should be able to work on some photos tomorrow or Friday. I hope you find the photo you're talking about cause I'd like to see it Chick-onby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
Quotetanngrisnir3 Actually, they're attributing the adapters for the LX3 AND the LX5 both to the LX3 only, so I'm writing them an email (the Panasonic DMW-LWA52 0.75x Converter is the LX5's). That's what I thought after reading one of your previous posts in another thread, so I figured it was a goof and they just listed the adapter in the wrong place. Hopefully it works for you, because iby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Some stunning shots. Have you tried PTLens? It's only $25 and I haven't found anything better for automatic distortion correction. I see the LX3 listed on the profiles page along with the WA adapter and also the LX5 but without the WA adapter. I would assume that they'd have the combination of the LX5 and WA adapter available for correction, so it's worth emailing them if you want to make surby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
Yep, glass is the pricey part if you want the best. I would think Canon would be releasing some substantially improved cameras this year since everything they have done for the past few years has been mostly small increments in quality. Sony's A55/A580, Pentax's K5, and Nikon's D7000 have all upped the APS-C ante. The dynamic range and shadow detail of Sony's sensor used in all those cameras iby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
Haha. I love it. The LX3 and LX5 are great tools for the price if you're shooting landscapes. My LX3 has a failing CCD, however, which is making me quite angry. Had it for just over a year, and the CCD is only covered by warranty for 90 days, when I started seeing a vertical "hot" line of pixels in every shot at ISOs above 200. Now it's starting to happen at all ISOs. Pretty sad tby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
QuoteFrank Furter No comment on the injuries to innocents. That would be the statistic I'd be much more interested in hearing about. It's up to a drunk person as to whether they want to put his or her own life at risk, but it's not up to them as to whether he/she wants to put an innocent person at risk. It's sad to hear that a drunk driver has died, but it's way worse to hear that pedestriansby dqniel - General Discussion
Yeah, I'm not to sure I understand why they would allow snowmobiles but not bikes. Seems like it wouldn't cause any more damage than cross-country skiers, and less damage than snowmobiles.by dqniel - General Discussion
