I'd rather not swim at all than swim in a life jacket. While boating, kayaking, etc, on the other hand, I always wear one. Recreational swimming just isn't very fun in a jacket.by dqniel - General Discussion
It snowed on me a little bit when I was standing at Glacier Point back on May 27, 2008. I also remember reading forecasts leading up to my visit, and it was near, possibly above, 100 degrees in the valley the week before. http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=MTS613&day=19&year=2008&month=5by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. There is a scale regarding darkness. I found a very detailed map with scale explanations when I was reading an astrophotography site, but I've lost the link I do remember seeing that in the U.S., the area with the combination of cleanest air and lowest light pollution was somewhere in southeastern Utah.by dqniel - General Discussion
Quotejustahiker Quotedoctorscholz OK, you people are making it impossible to fix my broken vacation plans. Let me throw out this not-so-hypothetical situation, just so you know who you're screwing over by flagging every single ad out there. I booked half dome permits for a weekend in July, and recently had to cancel the trip due to a wedding. If some appropriate forum existed out there, I mby dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. QuotePineCone QuoteHatomato I think all this Half Dome permit and campsite flagging is silly and a little hysterical, imo. The process is still unique and the results are sometimes quite different, so that will keep it alive as a niche. However, for most practical uses film is pretty much dead. Hopefully people can start looking it as two different markets rather than competing markets. There's a place for both technologies, especially when things such as slide film are considered.by dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
It's not the least bit silly or hysterical to flag the posts where people are trying to sell campsites or permits. It's illegal to do so and harms far more than it helps, if it even "helps" anybody other than those profiting. Trading, however, as others have already said, is probably fine. My guess is that somebody got a little overzealous and accidentally flagged it before readby dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

As I moved closer to the point where it narrowed up and the water became very strong I could see around the corner a man stuck in a nook on the side of the canyon. He yelled to us, "don't come down here, I've been here since yesterday." That made me laugh while reading. I have a sick sense of humor, I guess. For some reason in my brain it translated as "I don't want you to comby dqniel - General Discussion

I'm all for uncovering the "truth" when dangers are being hidden from us, but not when the uncovering is done via pseudoscience and sensationalism. I'm no expert on radiation, nuclear core damage, or global dispersion, but I feel like the reputable scientific journals that do cover such things would be making a bigger hullabaloo if there was such catastrophic, eminent danger.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I always thought it was kind of self-explanatory that you don't go into narrows, whether in Zion or other canyons, during times of year with high snow-melt or possibility of heavy rain. :/by dqniel - General Discussion

Fill a bucket with water and lots of ice cubes. Put so many cubes that after stirring for a minute there are still plenty of ice cubes remaining. Now submerge as much of your arm into it as possible. Leave it there for a bit, and now imagine what your entire body in that would be like. First trip there with limited time available then the valley is a must. Even though that's where all the rude, loud people are it's also the most stunning experience for a first-time visitor. I agree with going on the Happy Isles trailhead and going up the Mist Trail to Nevada and Vernal Falls. I went to Yellowstone and the Tetons when I was a little kid, and haven't been back since. I can't wait to get back there someday. I remember the Tetons seeming much "purer" than most of the parks in CO, but it could just be since I was a little kid. If I had the time I'd go north as well Mtn Man. I-70 through Utah is amazingly beautiful. Some of my favorite places that I went to on my way to and from Yosemite from Cincinnati are very dependent on which way you go though... north, "middle", or south route. I went southern on the way out through TX, NM, AZ and on the way back I went through the "middle" to NV, UT, CO.
