Rick, I am curious what John Muir envisioned as a day hike. Tried Gooling this but all that came up was the trail itself. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Bee, I agree with "big lonely country full of attitude". On an older thread somebody said cell phones don't work most places in Yosemite except YV & TM and that one might as well avoid adding the weight of a phone on the trails. Throwing rocks is a more effective form of emergency communication. Apache say rock go far in thin air. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Mike, I'm not sure what you mean by less than 20 miles per day at your age, unless you were joking. Does Dale make you run on the downhill legs? I consider 10 miles at high altitude pushing the limit (for me). I know from experience it's not the first day that get's you. It's the second day when you find out you gave all your blood the day before and there's nothing left. My hiking plan, whby tomdisco - General Discussion
My situation is a bit unique. On my trip to Yosemite high country next July I will be 64 years old but my wife is not up to it and I don't have any friends who could accompany me across the country on my schedule. Actually, this does not bother me in the least. It's my time alone, I will have looked forward to it for a year, and I need the spiritual cleansing of the High Sierra without a lot oby tomdisco - General Discussion
Gary, Regarding vantage point for the painting, many people are not aware that some artists, sensitive to the timely requirements of painting on site, would simply take a photo and later at their convenience paint from the photo. It is at that stage I think artistic license would often come into play. My wife's grandfather was an artist and writer. Nearly all of his paintings were done from pby tomdisco - General Discussion
Gary, Thank you for submitting some sanity to this discussion. I was getting a bit concerned. Way to go! Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Rick, Just as well. If there were hot springs in Yosemite it might have a $600./night hotel beside it called Delaware North Hot Springs Resort. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Rick, Nevermind, I found it. No wonder I could not find it on the Yosemite maps. You can tell I'm not from around there, even back when I used to be. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Rick, Where is Deep Creek Hot Springs? Are there really hot springs present? Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
eeek & Gary, You are being too generous. I would limit it to endlessly circling the 3 highway entrance booths in one hour intervals so they don't tie up traffic. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Frank, I agree on both points. I also think it's a shame we even have to resort to constitutional arguements for discourse on carrying concealed weapons in a national park. Everybody should just apply a little common sense and leave the d---- weapons at home. The State Police, Sheriff's Department, and Rangers may carry weapons within the confines of Yosemite because it is part of their job.by tomdisco - General Discussion
The constitutional right to bear arms was for the purpose of creating a colonial militia to fight the British. There is no longer a need to kill the British in our national parks last time I checked. Of course, they ARE foreign tourists so maybe it's O.K. to shoot them on Saturdays. They are easy to spot. They wear red and march in a straight line. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
The National Park system has formally announced that "Flame Body Spray" is categorized as a HAZMAT and is therefore prohibited within all national park boundaries. Don't feed the bears! Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Rick, For those of us like myself who are recent (2008) newcomers to this site could you summarize a little bit about how this site began? I'm assuming this is an official site created by Yosemite and that you are either a ranger or Yosemite employee of some capacity but don't know any of that for certain. It may actually be a completely private site created by you. Obviously, you either liveby tomdisco - General Discussion
Looks like the website burped and added a "new" to all the messages, including the old ones on prior pages. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Thanks, That's what I was hoping to find out. If it's a lot of heavy brush then obviously I would not save any time, which was the objective. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Has anyone here ever cut west off trail from the Young Lakes trail and followed Conness Creek down to Glen Aulin? If so, what's the going like? From maps and Google Earth it appears to be all downhill through heavy forest but I was wondering in particular what the going is like near the creek. It looks to be about 3 miles of off trail hiking. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
It's been awhile since I've done any flying, also in Cessnas. I don't recall the specific FAA rules regarding normal aircraft separation but I presume a special permit is required for civilian aircraft to fly in formation for a photo shoot, if indeed these are civilian aircraft. Kind of looks like they are. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Roland, I worry about you a little bit. It would seem that you have little experience snow camping in the high Sierra. Obelisk Lake appears to be a significant challenge for any winter hiker, given the fact it's essentially off-trail hiking, very steep in sections, and subject to unexpected severe weather this time of year. Mike provided some advice that might be worth heeding until you haveby tomdisco - General Discussion
Roland, Thanks for the information on Obelisk Lake. My plans for a solo trip to Yosemite in 2009 are already made for other trails but I'm thinking about doing the Red Peak/Clark Range loop in 2010 beginning at Mono Meadow off Glacier Point Road. Obelisk Lake might be worth adding to the loop although for me it will turn a 5-nighter into a 6-nighter. More food and used toilet paper to lug arby tomdisco - General Discussion
As Vince implied, one of the most pragmatic reasons not to carry a gun while hiking is the weight! It's just dumb! As for other places in the park, I have a difficult time imagining when carrying such a weapon would be justified. IMHO the rangers are the only ones who have any business having access to firearms in Yosemite, concealed or otherwise. I'm into hiking, not law enforcement. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
The old days for me, relative to Yosemite, were 1969-1972 when I first discovered the park while stationed at NAS Moffet Field in Mountainview, Ca. We would leave the Bay area around 4PM Friday and camp on the riverbed off Rt 140 (where one could actually drive out onto it). The next morning we would have one of the best breakfasts in the world at the resturant by the river in El Portal (destroby tomdisco - General Discussion

Bill, Yes it is. Thank you very much. I plan to take lots of photos on my trip in July and will share some of the more interesting ones. This one is of course the back side of Sentinal Dome taken in June this year. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Any more news or does this one remain a mystery? Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
O.K. folks. I'll add my name to Frank's as one who is sometimes computer challenged. I've successfully uploaded a photo to yosemitephotos.net but how again does one insert that into a message post and/or create a link in the message specifically to one or more photos? Thank you for your patience in advance. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Lisa, Chilnualna Fall trailhead is behind the village of North Wawona. It's about an 8.2 mile round trip between 4,500' and 6,500', all up hill on the way in, all down hill on the way out. Wawona Dome is southeast of the trail at 6,903'. Lots of switchbacks. Jimby tomdisco - General Discussion
Lisa, I don't know how much you are into hiking but a most modest hike at the top of the valley would be the Mirror Lake loop trail. Another great possibility is the Happy Isle trail from the southest corner of the valley which heads towards Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls. The falls are practically nonexistant this time of year but the scenary is great and gets you out of the valley a bit. Theby tomdisco - General Discussion
