I have been pathologically keeping everyone of those quarters that I find. I used one to make an inlay on a framed picture I took in 2005 from Yosemite.by Ryno98 - General Discussion
But let us all remember -- correlation DOES NOT equal cause-and-effect. You could also argue that carbon dioxide level increases have a linear correlation with small earthquakes in North Texas over the past 20 years (true). But few would argue that the CO2 caused the earthquakes... Be careful of interpreting data to prove your own agenda. My first visit to Yosemite was in springtime of a heavy snow year, and I stayed in the Valley/Glacier Point area the entire time. Couldn't even make it to Taft point because the trail was covered in deep snow. But I looked from every vantage point at this mysterious High Country with the mystique only heightened by the fact that the Tioga Rd was still closed. I made a point to come back 2 yearby Ryno98 - General Discussion
Why does it seem like the Tioga Pass cam goes down during spring (i.e. the most interesting time of year to check the cam) every year, and despite the road being open, they seem to have great difficulty in fixing the problem...by Ryno98 - General Discussion

I used a full length REI brand Thermarest but thought it was way too big/heavy for any kind of distance. Now I only use that one for lazy/short trips. The short one is the way to go. I have used the plain foam mat before. It is superlight, but in only dulls the rocks under you and has minimal R value. I am amazed that you were able to name most of those! May 2005 when I took those pics was the biggest spring run-off year that I've been to Yosemite and I was just running around taking pics of every sliver of water leaping off a cliff that I could find. We can just call #2 and #3 "Random "ephemeral" Unnamed Yosemite Valley Area Falls". Or maybe just Goat Falls...by Ryno98 - General Discussion
So I was looking back through some Yosemite pics I took in May 2005 and found several of waterfalls I can't identify... I remember that some were taken from the road just before the Wawona tunnel, and others are from the Valley. Any ideas? #1: #2: #3: #4: #5: #6: #7:by Ryno98 - General Discussion
One night last October I stopped at the tunnel view on the way back from some day hiking at TM. It was about 11 PM and there was not a single car in the parking lot (they had just opened the "new Tunnel View" parking lot/viewing area. It was a new moon. The view was completely different yet still almost overbearing. You could see the outlines of El Cap and the other landmarks only bby Ryno98 - General Discussion
Good luck, holmes. I wanted to get to Clouds Rest pretty bad the first time I visited Yosemite, but it was May, and the Tioga Rd wasn't open. No worries, there was still plenty of other stuff to keep me occupied. I came back in the fall that year and did the standard hike from Tenaya Lake. Much better idea.by Ryno98 - General Discussion
If you're into Yosemite history and old music, Tom Bopp (piano player at the Wawona) has a DVD of his most recent presentation. Very talented guy and always transports me to that hotel lobby on a cold fall night with a cold beer in my hand when I watch it.by Ryno98 - General Discussion
The sunset-appearing color on the rocks is actually from the sun being filtered through the smoke from the Wawona area prescribed fire last October. pevey.smugmug.comby Ryno98 - General Discussion
Definitely agree with the polarizer. Helps bring out the rainbow and can give the sky a more deep vivid blue color. I pretty much leave the polarizing filter on the camera for all of my middle of the day, clear/superbright day shots. Also helps for either cutting out or enhancing the reflection on a lake or river, whichever effect you want.by Ryno98 - General Discussion
Even with the saturation enhancement those pics look surreal! I hiked to Yosemite Point in the 3rd week of May 2005 (huge snow year) and only encountered snow after I crossed the bridge over Yosemite creek. There was not much snow on the actual trail, and mainly the really shaded/wooded areas were affected. Snow was really packed down where encountered; def. no need for snow shoes. Have fun. The view of HD from Yose. Point is incredible. View from Yoby Ryno98 - General Discussion
Granted I don't go to yosemite during peak tourist summertime when presumable the road is open, but I have never been able to drive the entire loop on any one trip. Has the Valley Loop EVER gone an entire year without major closures and construction?!?by Ryno98 - General Discussion
When I fly for a backpacking trip I put my entire backpack inside of a heavy duty nylon canvas duffel bag and check it. This keeps the straps and stuff from catching, protects the pack, and keeps me from losing stuff. I fly with my stove and everything else that I need. I just stop off at REI in Fresno and grab some fuel, then I'm good to go...by Ryno98 - General Discussion
Your options for backpacking will be somewhat limited at that time of year. You will encounter snow in the upper elevations as you hike out of the valley, especially in shady spots or northern exposures. Creeks and rivers will also be flowing high and fast which is good for the waterfalls but can sometimes make for some muddy hiking with very cold creek crossings. You could hike toward Half Doby Ryno98 - General Discussion
As for the Ahwahnee bashing, I just don't understand it. Don't get me wrong; I am not some rich Robb Report reading CEO. I stayed in the Ahwahnee for 2 nights on my honeymoon in 2005 before taking financial refuge in Wawona for the rest of my stay. Those two nights in Ahwahnee were truly special and totally worth the cost (which approached 50% of my honeymoon budget). It is not a place to staby Ryno98 - General Discussion
Crane Flat to the Mist Trail Trailhead is around 20 miles round trip (as the crow flies - prob. at least 25 by trail or road), not counting the mileage of the actual hike up to Half Dome from the Mist Trail (14.2 miles round trip). 35-40 miles in one day? Did you ride the bus for part of that? I don't mean to sound rude at all; I have just never heard of anyone hiking up Half Dome from Craneby Ryno98 - General Discussion
Crane Flat to Half Dome?!? That's probably a little more than a day hike... My pet peeves: 1. Incredibly large groups hiking together (usually some school group or foreign tour group). These people usually show no respect for their surroundings or other hikers and generally act like they are at the mall. Yes, you can avoid them by going on longer or more strenuous hikes, but it is a shameby Ryno98 - General Discussion
I also heard from somewhere that a Sentinal Meadow burn was in the works for this fall. This really seems like an inordinate amount of in-valley burning for one year. I understand the whole ecology thing, etc., but the NPS really does a disservice to people who are flying thousands of miles across the country to see Yosemite by not making this a more public notification. Last year I went up to Vogelsang for a few days the week after the HSC camps closed for the winter (September). Other than avoiding the dung on the trail from the mule trains used to haul all of the camp equipment down, the trip was very enjoyable. The HSC takes on a spooky, ghost-town appearance, but all of the sites and camping places are yours to enjoy. We camped a ways off the trail overloby Ryno98 - General Discussion

All of those things will help reduce the numbers of rude people. I have begun to frequent Yosemite especially in the late September through October period for this reason. You do miss out on the green valley, wildflowers, rushing streams and rivers, and giant waterfalls, however. I enjoy that time of year, but I would hesitate for that to be someone's introduction to Yosemite. It is a shame wby Ryno98 - General Discussion
