Old diversion dam for the water supply for the valley. It's not used any more. My understanding is that all the water for the valley comes from 3 wells in the valley that is then pumped to the huge green water tank that is near where that shot was taken. If you take the road behind the Happy Isles bathrooms you'll end up at the water tank. The Horse trail goes along the road and then continueby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. If you pre-reserve the wilderness permit, then you can stay Sunday night at the wilderness permit campgound ( the wilderness permit means you can stay the day before, and the day after your trip at the wilderness permit campground ). It's a walk-in campground and a bit hard to find. You'll have to carry everything in. Cars can't get anywhere near it. BEAR PROOF YOUR CAR!!!! The permit is for the trailhead you enter on, not the trails you travel on. So instead of a permit for entering at OBOFR, you'd get a permit for entry on Yosemite Falls trailhead. Each trailhead has it's quota of # of people allowed to enter each day. OBOFR vs YF shouldn't be a problem. The only problem would be if you wanted to enter at Happy Isles. This time of year there'd be so few tents ( if ANY ) it'd be easy to miss them. I've been there when I appeared to be the only one in the campground. Getting off work early. Home to pack and take care of a few odds/ends, maybe a quick short nap, and then the drive. Should be an interesting weekend! Thanks for the responsesby qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'm thinking of spending this upcoming Christmas weekend camping in Yosemite valley at Camp 4. The camping/snow/cold doesn't worry me much. What worries me is what will be open, or rather what will be CLOSED. Will the cafeteria at the Lodge be open? What are the options for shopping and food? Quotechick-on Lookie that... he remembered. Qumqats, It's Condon. There are a myriad of ways to get up there. If you want a map of the ways gone up there with comments... can do that. In a nutshell ... pretty much up the switchbacks to Beehive, turn left on Eleanor Rd. ... follow Eleanor rd. a bit.... then head S. to Condon. I wouldn't risk it. I've heard from the rangers that the Yosemite bears are active year round. Although I've never seen a bear during the winter. I think others will have more informed statements.by qumqats - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If the dynamic range of the shot is too wide to be captured you should take a look at doing HDR. 3 shots -2 0 +2 under exposed, properly exposed, over exposed they get combined by software I use ptGUI for my panoramas, but it'll also HDR That way you can see detail in the shadows and the clouds at the same time.by qumqats - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials
RAW <==> film negative, you've got the original image with full content captured. You have your lifetime to play with it to create images. bit depth is 10 to 16 bits. JPEG <==> paper print, you're stuck with someone else's processing. You can re-edit it, but you're limited in what you can do. bit depth is 8 bits. My serious stuff is in RAW. My snapshots are in JPEG.by qumqats - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Quotemrcondron The Loft pizza is OK. I'll ditto that. I had two pleasant experiences in the Loft last summer, and one years before when it was employee only. The video didn't even get down to the really steep part. Light traffic day. Not many people on the cables. I'm quite surprised to see the people using carabiners. I've never seen that before ( although maybe things have changed since my last time up there ). If you're that worried about it, should you be there? Quotehotrod4x5 Thanks for the photo. I am assuming there is a use trail that is visible, but of course, if there is snow, who knows... If you know to be looking for it you might think it a use trail, otherwise you'd just think it was a pile of rocks. I wonder how many people hike all the way to the start of this part of the trail, and never make it down to the railing because they don't know it's there. At one point there wasn't even a sign at the point. You just had to know it was there, and to head to the left till you saw the trail. There's a sign now, but it's pretty small and easy to miss.
