As we hiked up to May Lake they became a problem. That was coupled with the fact that I did not bring enough deet. We had to keep the head nets on and we used up the last of our deet just before dinner. We hiked out the next morning and saved breakfast until we got back to Tuolumne Meadows.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Here are the 45 best photos from my hike. I started at Tuolumne Meadows and hiked to Glen Aulin. From there I hiked down to Waterwheel Falls and camped at Return Creek. The next day was back to Glen Aulin. Then I hiked up to May Lake. It was a wonderful trip. Thanks again to everyone on this site for all the helpful info. I just got back from my trip today. What a wonderful time. I want to thank everyone that helped me prepare for my trip. The info I have found here was very helpful. Next year I hope to do Half Dome. My brother in law mistook Le Conte for Waterwheel last year. This year we made sure. He hiked in from the South fork of the Tuolumne and through Pate Valley, and I hiked down to Return Creek and campeby traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

"As you get a couple miles past the Glen Aulin campground around California Falls there were two water crossing portions. I highly suggest water shoes for this portion. The first one was about 100 yds of knee deep water and the the second one was about 50 yds of shin deep water. That's about it." One week to go and I have my fingers crossed. I think things have improved enough to at least try. I was told that around 6-21 there were two water crossings to worry about. One of about 100 yards of knee deep water and one about 50 yards of shin deep water. Dangerous solo water crossings are what I worry about the most. I hope and assume that those are reduced by now. If the conditions improve in time my hike start July 12. I am going up the Sat. before. I really don't want to get to extreme with the water crossings.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am hoping to stay as close as possible and at a high elevation. Part of the benefit of arriving Sat. for a Mon. start is to spend some time up around 7000 feet. I will try Saddlebag and Sawmill campgrounds. If not there, then down to Lee Vining.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Good to know. I called the ranger today and found out that you can't dispersed camp within 2 or 21/2 miles of a developed camp I can't remember which. That rules out the Saddlebag lake area because you can't get that far away. However he said that since they are all 1st come 1st serve you can usually get a site. That would be perfect.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am also looking to camp Sat. night. What about the Lee Vining side? I see that there is no dispersed camping in Lee Vining Canyon or June Lake loop. I see a forest road up to Saddlebag Lake. That would be very close if I can camp there.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

This was posted for June 21 by some Geocachers hiking to Water Wheel Falls. They don't say much about the conditions, but I guess they made it. Only two words to describe this cache: TOTALLY AWESOME. We were at Tuolumne Meadows last year on 6-20. The campground had just opened up for the year. We were able to get a site without reservations since the word hadn't gotten out yet. I am interested to see how much later it will open this year. My Glen Aulin hike starts 7-12. I hope conditions are reasonable by then.by traildad - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteYury Hi traildad, What kind of a tent have you used? How much does it weight? If you click on the link "My Camp" in my first post you will see a photo of it. It is a Wenzel.
