Yup, I distinctly remember moving what you now call the "Old Grizzly" tree over about 20 cubits to a better spot. He was less than half a cubit tall at that time. I'm doing this from memory, & I haven't found info on the web, so please be gentle. In 1863 or thereabouts, Donnelly ridge (South of the South Fork of the Kaweah) had a pretty good snow load. The ridge is about 1 1/2 miles long. There were early heavy rains that essentially brought the whole ridge down through Avalanche Canyon to the Kaweah. I was visiting friends on Christmas day, and heard this mog saves dog story. They have a miniature Yorkie, which weighs 2 1/2 pounds. Didn't catch her name, but "Snack" seems about right. They also have a medium-sized ginger tabby polydactyl cat named "Lobster". Might be due to the huge front feet, maybe because his coat color is Lobster Bisque. The story. Apparently, at some time in the past, an upper, cross-valley underground ridge/moraine entity was lowered to reduce mosquito problems. At the mouth of the Valley, a small dam (9'?) was built to raise the water table, kill the trees and make grazing better for the sheep. The point is that the water table has been adjusted, and that it largely controls the macro-ecology, and hence the appearancby wagga - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

We have a month or so for public comment, I'd like to know whether the MP takes the Valley water table into account. Setting the water table will control the landscape for hundreds of years. I understand that a rock barrier was blown up to drain the Upper Valley, and that a dam was built and subsequently blown up at the Valley mouth.
