Quotewherever QuoteHitech ANYTHING requiring ropes is not easy. Especially since I have no climbing training! OK. Stay away from the Death Slabs approach from Mirror Lake. You should be able to follow the climbers trail down from the subdome, as I described. Gawk at the face, explore the ledge and the grove, and go back the way you came.... Quoteoakroscoe You paid for gas at Crane Flat? I'm willing to bite the bullet and pay the "screw you surcharge, you're in yosemite" price for a six pack there, but gas is a whole other story. I fill up coming into Groveland and that's good for the trip. The closer you get to the Park, the more expensive gas & booze gets. Within the park, at least it's somewhat justifiable. QuoteERICG Sad news. People need to slow down when driving in the valley, more so in the Morning/Evening hours. Also, I know it's easy to be distracted while driving in Yosemite but you still need to pay attention!!! Yes, the speed limits are set up with the bears in mind. At their peak, they can only run 40-45 mph & can't react quickly enough to avoid cars going above the speed limits.by Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotesactown23 don't know if you're referring to my video, but I don't remember a railing per se, but rather a mini-cliff I shouldn't have been standing on. Actually now that I think about it, I think there may have been a railing, but I just wanted to get a little closer to the water to take some neat pictures.. Quoteplawrence Not to get too morbid, since people who know him might still be reading this thread, but I would think if he had accidentally gone off the cliff (or the falls itself) at the top, that his body would have been spotted pretty easily below the falls by now. My guess is that if he fell or slid off the trail, it was probably further down the trail away from the falls themselves. If hby Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteyosemitenut I'm hardly a forensics expert, but if the worst actually occurred, I would have thought some bone would have been found at the base of the falls or under a boulder. Bone is fairly strong, and easier to spot against the darker boulders. No matter what happened (going over the falls, fallen tree, heart attack/heat stroke off trail), hopefully some trace of him is found. Forby Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quotehotrod4x5 Going on a week now, I'm afraid the outcome is very grim at this point. This is a good reminder to always keep other members of your hiking party in view. Sad. QuoteJon Mure Saw some recent photos of Upper Yosemite Fall. How much water is flowing over Vernal Fall? Anyone have some recent photos? Generally, the waterfalls on the south side last longer than those on the north. Judging from what I saw of Illilouette, I'd say Vernal/Nevada are going just fine. As previously mentioned in the other forum, I abandoned my journey to Sierra Point about 2/3 way up. The weather was not too my liking, and I tend to be more on the cowardly/safer side of things. From email exchanges with someone who has been up there a few times, I took his advice and started from the High Sierra Loop Trail sign instead of the Rock Piles. Quotechick-on Did you find the bench marker? I did find it, amazingly. It is located on a rock to the left of that large bench (in front of Half Dome) that you can sit on. The rock is almost a natural cairn/duck. Looking down from the benchmark, you can see the Snow Creek trail switchbacks. Directly across is Watkins. I've done this hike, but w/o going up to Half Dome. So it was 17-18 miles I think. It still felt as if I were against the clock.
