Quoteplawrence If this is supposed to be a thread about USGS Bench Marks photos, I would suggest it would be a more attractive thread that if instead of just providing a link to your USGS bench mark photos, that you link the actual photos to your post so the bench mark photo appears in the post itself. Quotechick-on Um... you realize there is another one up there, no? #1 is still intact. The triangle one .. only the nub is there. Do you really want these? I have prob. close to 50 if you include the boundary markers. (from what I know.. there was never one at 8500 on Watkins... but SUPPOSEDLY there is one on Basket... but I swear I looked on so many of the rocks up there... and didn't find one!) Quotewherever Quotechick-on From what I pretend I know... You go up the Half Dome Slabs to NW face .. and it's all more or less class 3-ish. Quotechick-on Was kinda bummed that my perch was no more this spring: Is that the USGS high point marker on the pancake-shaped rock in the foreground (tiny bit left of center), underneath that tree...? Geez. But that happens to me all the time when I'm looking for stuff, even at home. It can be directly in front of me, and I won't notice it until later.by Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
QuoteSandpiper11 I wouldn't do it if there is any chance of ice. It was slippery without any added issues. I did it without hiking poles in June, mainly because there was a lot of scrambling with hands. Definitely worth the hike though. Nothing wrong with the use of hands, crawling/sitting on your butt, etc. Not a place to be worried about appearance, or lack thereof.by Ohnivy-Drak - General Discussion

I've heard nothing but high opinions on the Merced Lake hikes & Bunnell Cascades. I'm not particularly a lakes person, but Merced and Cathedral (U/L) Lakes are two in the "can't miss" category. I'll have to plan out a short version of your amazing hike centered around Vogelsong/Merced. Thx for your report, cheers!by Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteryanmj Does the trail from top of snow creek to tenya lake take you across the top, or did you guys find your own way? We actually started off @ Olmsted Pt. Didn't go down that staircase, but instead headed west from the parking lot. Lost the trail/ducks after a short while, so sort of manufactured our own way. Quoteplawrence Thanks for the detailed trip report. Hopefully you didn't get too many mosquito bites. It's amazing how bad the mosquitos are this year so late in the summer season. Usually be now (mid-August) they are a lot more manageable up in the High Sierra. Mt Watkins offers some tremendous views of Tenaya Cyn & quite a bit of solitude. Spots w/o an official trail can yield some underrated views, but not always of course. OTOH, North Dome has become one of the more popular destinations. Basket is the neglected one w/o a trail, which is why that's at the top of my list.by Ohnivy-Drak - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteplawrence Quotequmqats I've always thought the view from Eagle Peak is under-rated. I think it's one of the best in the park, but I rarely see people mentioning it. View from Eagle Peak of Yosemite Valley I don't know if the view from Eagle Peak is underrated, but it's definitely under-appreciated. It's one of the best views of Yosemite Vally, IMHO. Thanks for everyone's input. No worries about the slower responses. That was my first time on that part of the trail. In hindsight, we should have found a better route to ND/BD. Instead of going around Indian Ridge, there must be a route along the rim. That would have saved some time and energy. However, we would have missed this waterfall.
