Just thinking, but if samples of rain water in east Tennessee are showing up more elevated in radiation, wonder if the SNOW holds more solid particles as it falls on the higher elevations. Freezes and holds the fall-out better. Then the run-off has not been diluted/filtered by nature as much at the river/stream drinking source. True that it may kill the {bugs}, but we might grow a third leg and nby beardbuster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Has there been any water samples taken from snow melt run-off or snow pack to see if any radiation levels have increased? With all the news of Idaho, Washington,California,Oregon and Canada showing higher radiation levels in tap water, I am curious about back-country water supplies. What kind of temperature change is there from the valley floor to say above LYV in June. Night time temps. especially. I have heard or read that it runs aprox. 15 degrees lower at higher elevations than the valley floor. Trying to plan for 2+ week trip from June 8th - 24th with my teenage sons. Gotta be comfortable!! Thanks for any info you may have!!by beardbuster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
That is kind of what I was thinking. They word things on their web pages that seem to contradict what they say. I like what you have to say about the issue even better!! Hope all turns out well for us all this year!!by beardbuster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Just to clear up the air: The person that I also talked to by phone as of last Wednesday said these extra nights camping in backpackers camp at LYV. would be an additional $5 per person per nite besides the fee to be drawn for the wilderness permits. Could put the extra nites on at time of permit pick-up. There is a trailhead entry date and exit date. Exit date could be modified but would be an aby beardbuster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I got "drawn" for a wilderness permit for entry on June 20th @ Happy Isles>LYV. I e-mailed them in regards to your question and they told me that I could enter trail-head the day before and stay over-nite and stay past the 20th for multiple nites for the "low cost" of $5 per nite per person in my party. When I pick up my WP's just let them know the date you want to do Halfby beardbuster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Got mine! Was not what i was after but i can't complain. Tried for Lower Pines and ended up at Wawona. Did get our wilderness permits and Half Dome permits for June 20th. Hope weather permits the cables to be up by then. All these things having to hit together seems to be impossible. This system is as "nerve-racking" as it can get!!by beardbuster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am looking to bring my young teenage sons to the park in June 2011 to take a climb up Half Dome and I used to stay at the lower pines somewhere close to the rivers edge. The view up the river you could see Half Dome from the site. I came up while I served in the Marine Corp. in early 80's and my last trip was in spring of 91. Can't remember what site it was.
