All of the routes to Yosemite are my favorites. Although it would be out of your way coming from San Francisco, Hwy 41 has that awesome Tunnel View of the valley which is second to none.by Louis - General Discussion
Harvey, Something you might consider regarding the 395 route. Once you turn onto Hwy 49 at Jackson you'll be constantly dealing with 25 MPH speed limits as you go through countless small towns. Every time you get up some speed you hit another town and a 25 MPH zone. Some of the towns are quite interesting but if you've been driving all day the trip on Hwy 49 can really wear on you. Rick, Good shot...from the Leavitt Falls Overlook I would guess. I always stop there on my way up.by Louis - General Discussion
I noticed in the new TM Winter Update that Caltrans has already plowed the road from the east beginning at the Lee Vining gate all the way up to the Warren Fork.by Louis - General Discussion
I just checked it and it seems ok at the moment.by Louis - General Discussion
Vince, ,A friend saw the deer/cat photo and wants to put it on his web site. Do you have any idea who it belongs to so he can ask permission to use it?by Louis - General Discussion
Looks like the heaviest part is aiming right at Yosemite.by Louis - General Discussion
We've been getting high wind for over an hour but no snow yet. It's almost 4 PM.by Louis - General Discussion
Rick, you sure called this right last week.by Louis - General Discussion

That Reno forecaster sure isn't at a loss for words. It's 11 AM at the lake and we are getting a mixture of rain and snow. The temperature is in the upper 30s and falling. I checked and Hwys. 120, 108, and 4 are all closed now.by Louis - General Discussion
I notice the road was open again this afternoon but that will probably change big time sometime Thursday.by Louis - General Discussion
This afternoon they changed it to a Winter Storm Warning at Tahoe.by Louis - General Discussion
This one looks promising. All the snow we had earlier at Tahoe is gone except what they are making on the ski slopes.by Louis - General Discussion
Rick, you sure got that right. If they ever learn how to pick locks.....by Louis - General Discussion
Now I know who that was zooming above my head the last time I was in Yosemite. : )by Louis - General Discussion
I'm glad I made this trip yesterday. When I looked out this morning I found snow on the ground and it's still coming down. The roads around Tahoe all have controls at this time. I also notice that Hwys. 108 and 4 are closed by snow.by Louis - General Discussion
I was in Lee Vining Canyon today photographing some of the aspens. It took a bit more effort to locate some good color than in previous years but there are some really nice spots to be found. I spent more time waiting for the wind to die down so I could make an exposure than I did finding the best locations.by Louis - General Discussion
For weather info up here I utilize the "What's-It" method. I look out the window and see what's it doing outside. Not very technological but it's really "up to the moment" accurate...and it never needs new batteries.by Louis - General Discussion
That's good to see this early. We got some in the upper mountains at Lake Tahoe but not as much as Tioga.by Louis - General Discussion
Great pictures, Rick. I used to go to the Lake June Loop. Then I discovered Lee Vining Creek which is, I think, much better.by Louis - General Discussion
I'm in total agreement with you, Vince. I can't imagine living elsewhere. Once I'm out of Zephyr Cove and down the mountain it doesn't take long before I feel like I'm alone on a distant planet. And anyone who has driven east on US 50 for a few hours will certainly agree that it is in fact "The Loneliest Highway In The World."by Louis - General Discussion
Have they finished working on the dam or is Ellery Lake still empty?by Louis - General Discussion
I found some reference to a prescribed burn in Yosemite Valley today. Would that be what we're seeing on the cam?by Louis - General Discussion
According to the Incident Commander on the fire up here the entire Sierra is the driest he's seen it at this time of the season in his 41 years of being a firefighter in them. Just a hint of a spark is enough to start a fire. Looks like it's going to be a long and dangerous summer.by Louis - General Discussion
One of the big problems up here at Tahoe is the TRPA, a bi-state agency which has unchecked control and apparently unlimited power to dictate practically everything in the basin. Some of their rules are good but some of them are incredibly stupid. An example...the fire people want you to have a defensible space around your house so you clear all this out. Then, here comes the TRPA and says you cby Louis - General Discussion
According to the Mono Lake web site, Tioga Road will open from Lee Vining to Tioga Lake on Wednesday, April 25th.by Louis - General Discussion
