hey all, will be approaching cathedral lakes from the northeast (on jmt) on my way to tenaya pk next month (gawd, i can't wait!). looking at mi topo, i was originally thinking i had to proceed southwest on the jmt and round columbia finger before heading back (cross-country) northwest to tenaya pk. however, noticing the rising ridge twixt upper/lower cathedral lakes, i was wondering if i couby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. nice pic. pardon my ignorance, but where you facing north/northwest when snapping that photo? is that the trail running along the east (right) side of the creek? thanks, mtcby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
thanks for the comments. chick -- appreciate the objective "yosemite-ish" vs. "alpine-ish" comparison -- even i can grasp those descriptions! if the snow isn't too bad, it may come down to a coin-flip.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
finalizing a loop for mid-june 5-day trip. needing feedback regarding the route from merced lake to toulumne pass. seems i have a choice of a shorter option going via emeric lake or slightly longer via vogelsang pass. anyone care to share pros/cons for each route? thanks all! mtcby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. absolutely love the pics. is there a way to mark all subject lines with some kind of icon so that we would know if a picture was attached? i would often times enjoy just simply browsing new photos. how about a photo album section with nothing but pics?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. nice, chick, i'll be up there with my son mid-june. what's the flat-top peak to the left of tenaya lake?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
beautiful snowfall pics abound on this and other sites, wow! where can i find out how much snowfall fell at different points around yosemite? like, how much in the valley, how much in LYV, or even on CR?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
i have a dream ....... of spendiing a night atop one of the QD's. anyone here ever done that? some of the pics i've seen posted here look like it could be quite nice. i suppose i'd have to carry some water up there. pretty exposed also. not a good place for a sleepwalker, eh?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. planning a trip for mid june and need some advice. Happy Isle through LYV to Merced Lake to Emeric Lake through Tuolomne Pass up to JMT west and then south through Cathedral Pass past Columbia Finger then west by Sunrise Lakes over Clouds Rest and back down through LVV to the Valley. about 65 miles as i roughly figure. concerned about high water levels around the lakes and creeks/rivers at thatby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. my son and i were hiking the north rim back in June while the SAR were combing the area for the Yos Falls fellow. We were on top of El Cap when they landed a helicopter up there to changeout personnel. We were also interviewed by a couple SAR guys along the trail.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. yes, that was the last i'd seen here. thanks.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
haven't heard if they found all 3 of the poor souls who went over vernal falls a few months ago. anyone know?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
ok, how do i add a pic? when i click on the dang insert image icon, it asks me for a flippin' url ....what the heck is a url? i just want to paste a frickin' pictureby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
really just suprised as i was on the north rim up obofrt and down snow creek several weeks ago and water was flippin' everwhere. i guess that record snow is really melting fast. while i consider myself an ultralighter, i usally tend to error on the side of a full two liter platy when within a couple miles of proposed camp.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. nice pics/dreadful story of de-hydration. considering a similar trip soon. just askin respectfully -- with no water showing twixt snow creek and watkins, why didn't you fill up at snow creek? also, what about the sunrise lake outflow creeks, the couple of ponds and couple creeks on the way up to clouds rest? i'm not sayin', i'm just askin'.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. thanks! cross country sounds like the idea -- especially with the snowcover -- i had posted earlier that i plan on utilizing the navigational advantage of my circumnavigation around the valley (rockslides, el cap, yos falls, snow creek, tenaya lake, cloudsrest, halfdome, LYV) by simply utilizing the valley and landmarks for, well ..... navigation.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. does anyone think that the north rim may be blocked by any of normally crossable creeks? on the north rim, i suppose that walking upstream should yield better/safer opportunities, no?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
awesome! Man, I really envy you guys out there so close to the Sierras. Please take a dang picture of the outlet --- you know, one with you standing chest deep?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
oh, is there no better crossing downstream from the outlet?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
well then, unless i can catch the tenaya lake ferry, i'm definitely going to try my luck walking around the inlet side of the lake next week.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
ok guys, what does this mean for my trip (starting saturday) around the north rim to tenaya lake -- across tenaya outlet -- cloudsrest/halfdome and down to LYV? how will the crossings of the creeks along the north rim be?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
nice pictures! my boy and i will be attempting mid-next week -- totally inspired by your post & pics! was the sub-dome tricky with the snow? i think i've read where that's what's keeping the cables down -- the precarious snow on the sub-dome. how were the cables sans posts?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. sound advice, thanks. around the midwest and on the AT, i have typically used an MSR pump/filter (17 oz) because the water is often "cloudy and musty". however, i just figured that the "high sierra" water would generally be "clear and tasty" and would simply use the steripen (4 oz) to kill the nasties.by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
thanks. i really like the platypus style "soft bottles" for water carrying/storage -- like the gallon jug you've used, they weigh next to nothing but also collapse to near nothing when empty. as far as "organic matter", if present, i do plan on filtering through a bandana to catch the big chunkies. what has your experience been with the general clarity of water sources?by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
just over a week away from our 6-day trip around the valley. ever concerned about packweight, i'd rather not carry any water i don't need to. i gotta believe that finding water will be the least of my worries (let me know if this is a candidate for "understatement of the year". my idea is to not carry water during the day at all in my hydration platy -- hear me out -- with my steripenby mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. regarding the tenaya lake pic --- couldn'd possibly look like that -- waaaayyy too much sunshine. geesh, everytime i look at the live cams around the valley it looks dark and dreary. what's up over there!!!!!!!by mtc - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
